I'm interested in the world around me. I've used this as a way to find out random information and to see what might be interesting to me, but not already known. I've recently started a fish tank up and the people here (God bless them) have been very helpful. Perhaps saving my fishes lives.

  • Simpliying Variable Expressions using multiple properties?

Hi, this is comlicated for me, so if I don't ask clearly it's because I'm not 100 percent sure of my question. I'm studing some pre algebra and I have to simplify some equations using different properties such as the distributive property and the alternate form of the distributive property. The question I'm working on involves combining like terms.

So the example I'm working on is simplify 12z-8a+3-16z+8.

I got the whole thing about combining them but how do you know which sign to put next? Sorry, let me try to state that clearly.

If you combine 12z and 16z how do you know if you should add them or subtract them? Do I use the sign after the first number of before the second?

The answer I came up with was 12z-16z+8a+8a+3 which in turn goes to -4z+16a+3.... but when I did that math the answer I had was different then the book. So I must have combined them wrong.

If you know what I'm talking about, I know I'm not being very clear, please give me a hand and explain this the easiest way you know.

Thank you so much in advance

  • I broke the rules, I bought a sick betta, can you help?

Ok, I was at walmart (I try never to buy fish there because they tend to be mistreated) and saw this stunningly beautiful male betta. He's just so nice to look at I had to buy him. I looked him over and could tell he's got fin rot at the least. His fins are just starting to rot so I think I can save him. I know you should never buy a sick fish, but I just couldn't help myself.

Anyway. I got him in a three gallon tank for now as a hospital tank. Once he's healthy he'll be going into a ten gallon tank. For now though he has a heater and salt in his water. I went and got some Maracyn and Maracyn two. I had Maracyn TS already, but I don't want to use that.

So the question is 1. Should i use both Maracyn's at the same time? Or use one then the other?

    2. Is there anything else I can do besides the medicine to help him heal quickly and boost his immunity?

    3. How long after he appears healthy should I wait before moving him? I don't want him to get the other guy sick.

He's going to live with another betta in a ten gallon tank with a divider to keep them from attacking each other.

The heat and salt seems to be helping a bit since he wouldn't eat at fist and now he will. Also he would run away from a mirror before and now he's starting to flare at it. These are good signs I think, right?

  • My white skirt tetras aren't schooling together?

I have five white skirt tetras and they all stay at different spots in the tank. Now I used to have only two but everyone told me it's important that they be able to school together. So I went off and got three more. Now they seem to ignore each other. Is this normal? Will they eventually school together or do I just have a rather boring tank?

It doesn't seem like they even swim around much. They each have their little area they don't really leave. Except at feeding time.

    The tank is ten gallons.

  • I think both tanks are stocked now, but is it an ok mix?

I have three tanks. One is five gallon with just a male betta. I've given up trying to find him tank mates, he's just mean.

The second tank is ten gallons and it has two snails and five fruit tetra's. I hate that they dye the fish but I didn't know that when I got them. So I was only going to keep the two I have but they really needed to be in a school, they were kicking each others butts.

The third tank is twenty gallons and there is a school of five glo fish and three zebra fish, they all school together since they're the same species. They don't seem to notice that they're different colors. There is also seven neon tetra's. It's interesting but it almost seems as if they all school together, despite being different kinds of fish, the danio's and the tetra's I mean. Anyway, there's also a snail and a small algae eater.

Are these good mixes? Neither tank is overstocked?

  • zebra danios and glo fish. Same thing right? will they school together?

I got three zebra danios and wanted to get three more, since they are schooling fish. I was busy and asked my friend to get them for me. Well she came back with five glo fish. Now I put them in my tank, plenty of room, and planned to go back and get three more zebra danios to help them feel more comfortable. I noticed they look A LOT alike, except their coloring of course. Research showed that they are the same fish, just one has been genetically altered.

So here's the questions I put to you. I put them in the tank together and the zebra fish are either separating and trying to beat on the glo fish, or they're schooling together. Will they school together? How can I tell if they are bullying each other? They look like their playing but I don't want to come home and find pieces of tail everywhere.

  • trouble cycling my fish tank?

Ok, so I've been cycling my fish tank for about two weeks and the amonnia levels have been about 2.5 for the whole time. However I have not gotten any nitrate or nitrite at all.

it's a twenty gallon tank with filter, heater set to 74, and lots of gravel. There are bulbs and live plants in there but the bulbs are going to be removed. They aren't growing at all, but have a fuzzy growth on them. I'm not sure if it's a fungus, a beard algae, or something else from the bulbs themselves.

Am I over reacting? Shouldn't there be other levels by now? I'm a bit confused.

  • My betta hates the filter, I need help finding a good one?

I've tried a couple of different kinds of filters but the current they produce is just too much for my betta. He ends up flipped over and stressed out. Not a happy fish.

Are there any filters that create less current?

  • Fishless cycling a 20 gallon tank?

I've been working on a twenty gallon tank for about a week now. I keep the temperature at 76 degrees because it has plants in it that are going to have to survive until the fish are in there too ....

This morning I woke up and there was a white flowery thing on the gravel. It looks like algie. It also stinks to high heaven. I was wondering if this is normal or does it mean I'm doing something wrong? I'm really glad there are no fish in there to have to deal with it.

  • Can the tank already be cycled? How can I tell?

My friend had an uncycled tank and put fish in it. I put a question up a few days ago about how to prevent the death of her fish while it cycled. She got some bacteria in a bottle (though we were warned it might be dead already) and did change the water pretty often. But the tank is less than two weeks old. Well for the last two days there have been no ammonia readings, nitrate, or nitrite. Does this mean it's fully cycled? Is it really possible to cut it down from a month to less than two weeks?

  • Is there anywhere you can download free ringtones or songs without getting a virus or in trouble with the law?

I don't like things like limewire because you might download a virus. I also don't like the idea of police coming to my door. My friend got in trouble through kazzar for that. Is there anywhere that has truly free stuff? If so are there catches? (have to sign up for something else first kind of thing.)

  • glow fish (the zebra danios) and neon or glow tetras?

I got yakked out earlier by someone who said that I was cruel for having neon and glow tetra's.... now I know that glow fish are cruely dyed.... but the tetra's come that way naturally... don't they?

The fruit loop or mixed fruit tetra's are dyed...I know that.

  • Wha'ts the difference between Nitrate and Nitrite?

I know as the tank cycles it creates first one then the other.

I know that one is deadly for fish and the other is stressful, but not necessarily fatal...

Anything else you can tell me about them?

  • Does an african dwarf frog need air from the surface?

I have my frog in the tank with my other fish and I was just reading something about they get stressed out from trying to get to the surface to breath. Now I might be an idiot but I thought they had gills like fish. I'm wrong aren't I?

My tank is ten gallons, is there any way I can create something for him to rest on near the top?

  • The airstone in my fish tank broke?

I have an air-stone on the air tubing and it broke. My question is do I need the stone? What is it for? Can I just leave the tube in there?? Would it still put air in the water?

  • Will my African Dwarf Frog starve?

My tank has four glo tetras, two fruit tetras and three zebra danios (or however you spell their species) and one African Dwarf Frog. My problem is the frog is very shy, or perhaps afraid, of the other fish. He hides in the plants all day. That's fine. What isn't fine is that at feeding time he watches all the fish go nuts, but whenever he jumps up to get some food one of the fish eats it first.

I've tried adding more food once he becomes active and goes for it, but the fish just end up over eating.

Is there anything I can do to make the food more accessible to him? Are there any types of bottom feeders that might work or something? I don't want him to starve. If worse comes to worse I'll have to move him to a new tank, but I really don't want ANOTHER tank ... I already have three other small tanks and it's starting to become a chore rather than a hobby.

  • Uncycled 10 gallon tank?

My friend set up her tank one day and put five fish in it less than a week later. She didn't do it on purpose or with a disregard for her fish, she simply misunderstood the cycling process. She thought it was simply to let the water set and the air enter it.

So now she's freaking out. She's got the right information and she's scared her fish are going to die. Is there any ways she can help prevent that from happening while the tank cycles? I told her to feed the fish very little and to do frequent water changes, but is there more she can do?

  • My betta might be sick?

I tested his water and it was fine. But he seems swollen. His stomach is looking swollen and his color is starting to fade a little, light lines are all over his body, but that's what happens to him when he's stressed, So I know he's stressed out by something.

I know the other day he was dive bombing his gravel and got advice about letting the water sit out longer before using it. I wonder if the water the other day caused him to become sick or do you think it's something else?

What are some ways I can check him for disease?

  • My betta is acting very odd?

My betta fish is dive bombing his gravel. His color is good, there's no lines or color fading which is what happens when he's annoyed or freaked out. (he always turns light color when I have to pull him out of the tank.)

I have no idea what's causing this behavior. He'll swim around frantically for a few minutes, take a breath of air from the top. Then BAM, down he goes to move his rocks around. I don't get it, any idea's?

  • If I straighten my hair everyday will I lose my curls?

I have very wavy curly hair naturally and it's really hard to control without a bunch of different chemicals. I hate sprays and gels and stuff, but I have recently started straightening it. I like having it straight because I don't have to put anything in it. However I heard that if I straighten my hair too much it'll end up frizzed (from being over dry, which I can understand) and that I might lose my curls. Is this true?

  • Is this a good mix for my tank? 10 gal?

I have a betta fighting fish which I'm going to put on one side of a divider (about a third of the tank) and on the other side is five little tetras, 2 mixed fruit tetras (wouldn't have bought them if I knew how they came to be pink and blue, but it's too late now) a mystery snail, and a couple of african dwarf frogs. I have all these already but they are in separate tanks at the moment. Do you think these are a good mix?
