Yes it should, but I would rotate the current bowls to serve as the playoff games

the ncaa cant do anything to the BCS format untill 2011 when the current contracts are up. The Colleges don't make a 'ton of money' from the bowl games. the real money and the whole reason cities host bowl games is the tourism money. why else do people travel to charlotte, nc the last week of december unless there is a bowl game the main sticking point is the Rose Bowl. the Rose bowl actually wants nothing to do with the BCS if they had their way and the Rose Bowl has the Pac-10 and the big ten forever in contracts. i think with the current BCS title game will become an and 1 game or there will be a 4 team play-off. that would really settle everything rarely is the no 5 team truely a deserving nat title contender. most years its only 2 or 3 legit title contenders. i agree with the dude below the beauty of college football is the regular season and every game mattering. do not change the current system too much no more than 4 teams in the nat title play-offs tourney

Yes, a playoff is a good idea and imminent, however I have some stipulations that most people do not share.

It would be an 8 team playoff with the top four teams seeded and hosting the home games. The last four teams selected would be unseeded and randomly matched with one of the top four seeds. This may not sound good to people, but the last four teams into the tournament will be really close and it will eliminate arguments over 7th seed and 8th or 7th seed and 6th. The semifinal round will also be hosted at the higher seeds home site. The title game will be hosted at a neutral site one week following the semifinals so there is no layoff. It will also remove any biases the selection committee may have in trying to make favorable matchups. The advantage given to the 1 seed is a home game, and the number 1 seed should be capable of beating any 5-8 team or they wouldnt be a number 1.

NO AUTOMATIC BIDS will be awarded for the playoffs. The idea of the playoff is to find the true best team in the country and the automatic bids may lock out better teams ( ie. no 9-4 Virginia Tech locking out undefeated Boise State).

The BCS formula could stand as is in order to provide some fairly analyze strength of schedule and other factors, but teams would be selected by a dedicated selection committee who would have to make thier selections visible to the public. This provides some accountability to us the fans, unlike the Harris Poll which has voters who dont have any obligation to watch the game and some didnt even vote every week.

Yes it should. But it probably will not happen for a while.

The people making the decisions have been around for a while. It is hard to write off the tradition of Bowl Games. Plus the bowls themselves do not what to lose their slice of the pie. In order to get a playoff, that is what they will have to do.

I can see a legitimate playoff system with 8 teams. That would extend the season by 2 games for the eventual champion and runner up. Let them play Thanksgiving weekend or the first weekend of December. The four winners would meet in their respective bowls. For example, Penn State and USC won their elimination game, the Rose Bowl would hold one of the Semi-finals. However, if both lost, then the Rose Bowl would be the Rose Bowl. Tradition still in tack. Instead of the BCS Championship game being a bowl. Rotate it like the Super Bowl. It already off New Years day anyway!

No the BCS should not adopt a playoff System. Instead these are the fixes the bcs need to adopt to make the system more fair.

    1. Have the Previous year's final poll rankings be the next season's preseason poll. This allows team who have a strong season one year to try and build off their success, rather than just allowing random preseason polls that mean nothing and biased towards the big programs get a huge advantage.

    2. Force All BCS major conferences to Play a conference Championship game. And tweak Conference Championship participant rules to allow 2 teams that get into a situation like texas and Oklahoma to play a rematch for the conference Championship, rather than having Oklahoma face a 9-3 missouri team. Conferences should be able to tweak the conference Championship Game to include 2 teams in the same division if those 2 teams, are tied and are Both in the top 5 in the bcs polls.

    3. Get rid of all Conference tie ins with the BCS Bowls and adopt a Plus 1. For the Plus 1 only conference champions are allowed for consideration.

If you all my changes took place, What you would of had this year was And oklahoma vs texas big 12 conference championship game winner going into the plus one game against Utah, and Florida vs USC in the other game. Than the winners play int he national championship game. The debate between Florida and alabama was settled on the field, Oklahoma vs texas debate also would have been settled in a rematch, and USC and Utah would have had a shot. If the BCS could just adopt these changes, A lot of the need and debate for a Playoff would probably stop, while keeping the integrity of the season and the bowl season intact.

    No it shouldn't:

How can you have a playoff system when you have 68 teams play in bowls? I know this is probably wrong to say, but Bowl games are about making money. When was the last time you saw FedEx, Papa Johns, and CITI wanting to split money? Everybody is in it to get their own, because they want more money.

Also, look at who sponsors each schools football program. I'm sure Nike is making a killing with these Bowl games. Not only that, but a Playoff system wouldn't make nearly as much money. Who would go to see the first round of a college playoff series, let's be honest.

Hawaii went undefeated last year, and got shown up when they played Georgia. So it can't be about who has the best record to decide.

Div 3 has playoffs, but there aren't nearly as many powerhouse teams in Div 3. Also, who can name the Div 3 champion of this year? Their season ends so early, almost no one cares.

To sum it up, Bowl games are fine, I think they just need to find a way to fix the system. Besides, when a weaker team makes a BCS Bowl, and wins over a better school, that brings them up in ranking. Can't say that about a playoff team. Just some food for thought

    Yes it should.

A playoff system is the only way a true national champion can be crowned. Every year there is one team or multiple teams that claim they deserve a spot in the national title game and did not make it. Every year there is controversy on which team is the best, and in some years they have co-national champions. Alot of teams in the country will never get a chance to play for the title simply because of what league they are in and where their school is located on a map. The current system is extremely flawed and biased and a playoff system needs to be adopted.

Yes they should have a playoff system take the 10 top ranked teams and let them play that way even some of the teams in smaller conferences has a shot as long as they can make it to the top 10

    Yes, it should.

Just put the top 8 teams in a playoff. Play the games right after the regular season ends. The losers get automatic bowl bids. The two remaining teams play in the National Championship game, just like they do now. All of the bowl games remain intact. You just get those, plus two rounds of playoffs.

It's such an easy solution. I don't know why there's so much resistance to it.

YES IT SHOULD. I think the $$$ that the major bowls pay out could easily be made in a playoff game. The only problem is that I think schools that didn't play in a certain playoff game should also get a portion (revenue share) of the proceeds...but that's another problem altogether. I'd like to see USC travel the 2400 miles to play in Happy Valley!!!
