has anyone used melatonin to help thier children sleep?

my 9 year old daughter claims to have trouble sleeping at night. last night was a typical night. I put her to bed between 8 and 830 at night. she was down no less than 4-6 times by 930 for water and trips to the bathroom. if it was not one of those it was "daddy...come sit with me til I go to sleep". By 10pm I told her that she was getting spanked if she came down again to tell me that she could not sleep. Someone told me that she uses melatonin with all 4 of her kids to help them sleep, but I cannot get ahold of her for the doses. Today I bought a bottle of 300mcg tablets. Do you think one will be enough? she weighs about 60 pounds.

Update:

for ? and all the others who think I am trying to get out of being a parent by "drugging" my daughter...you are so far from the truth. I cannot remember the last time she did not come down 5-8 times a night without her dad sitting by her side. He frequently works late, so I have to be the one to convince her to go back up to bed. If you look at my question history you will see that she also does not like to listen to me. I cannot allow her to keep her 2 brothers up every night.

My cousin has used melatonin for her hyperactive son for insomnia since he was 4. This was suggested by the psychologist.

I do think 1 will be enough. There are reports from the U. of Maryland saying that although the efficacy of melatonin for use in children ages 6m-15 yrs is reportedly safe at 1-10mg that 0.3mg is the recommended dose.

    300mcg-micrograms is equivalent to 0.3mg

The decimal place moves over to the left 3 spaces

also-my sister in law takes it

also a friend of mine has had her son on it per developmental docs orders since age 3. He is also hyperactive.

tryptophan does help induce somnolance but for someone with insomnia it may not be enough

melatonin is considered a very inocuous medication and is even used on infants in double blinded studies

As a parent of multiple children with issues after wrestling with my child in public or having to pick him up from the special needs school cause they can't handle him, I can tell you that better parenting and a glass of milk are not always a feasible answer, judgement from typical children's parents is a constant. I have seen enough of your answers to know that you have good judgement, if you think she needs it, then she does.

Melatonin is used for kids regularly because of its safety and very young ones at that. It helps increase serotonin levels so therefore helps for insomnia, depression and ADD/HD and this is a fact.

Melatonin can cause headaches and restlessness and I wouldn't recommend it.

However, a nice warm glass of milk will do the trick, because heating milk releases the tryptophan found within the milk's casein, the agent known to cause drowsiness after eating turkey on Thanksgiving.

Try the milk. Your daughter will thank you for it.

sorry but that sounds like it is the part of parenting. Make sure she gets outside to play outdoors and wear off some energy. Read her a book and make up some warm tea. The one that I like to use is sleepy time tea. Also a warm bubble bath that would relax her.

Don't be shocked if you get hate answers though.

the problem with any kind of drug, be it OTC, perscription, or herbal is that it can really mess up your sleeping pattern, especially in children. 300mcg is enough, don't go over that unless you are told so by a doctor. If this continues, consider enrolling her in a sleep study

no its not for kids.. the whole thing about melatonin is ..we lose it as we mature into teen years ..this is why teens have trouble sleeping and getting up with the sun. Children already have it. Melatonin causes depression ..in adults

Source(s): you dont DRUG kids wtf is wrong with you ..be a damn parent
