Are you using a router or do you want a direct to computer conneciton?

WIth a router, you just run the network setup wizard (on both machines) set the workgroup to the same name, set the file and printer sharing to ON, then go to the printer setup, right click and click "share printer". Thats all it takes really.

    Here is Microsofts help information.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networkin...

With a router, wired or wireless, all machines are on the same network and all can share printers and files once setup.

If you don't have a router, you have to have an AD-HOC system setup and then do the network setup. Little more difficult.

bypass to the tcp/ip settings on your laptop. click stepped forward and use the wins tab to set constantly use netbios over tcp/ip, then turn off use lmhosts. while the gadget argues approximately an empty wins handle override this. turn all your firewalls on, then set the exception for document and printer sharing on all of them. Netbios is mandatory to small community surfing, so MS set it to teach off while it sees a router?
