For those who don't follow the liturgical calendar, it basically begins and ends whenever they are accustomed to beginning and ending it.
For the rest of us, Christmas begins on the evening of the last day of Advent and ends at Epiphany.

Businesses do. They once petitoned FDR to move Thanksgiving back a week so that they could start the Christmas shopping season earlier. He did, but the uproar became so great that it was moved forward to it's present day and locked in forever.
I have seen some businesses start putting up Christmas decorations and sending out catalogs in August, saying "It takes time to fill customers' orders, so we need to start now so they can choose and get their orders by Christmas."
Uh huh. These are also the same merchants that wail that people aren't spending enough over the holidays, and they aren't seeing the profit margins that they desire.
The only "jingle bells" that matter any more are those of the cash registers, it seems. Maybe we should change our motto from "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" to " Life, Liberty and the pursuit of profit".
