Nice question, isn't fear actually the state of being fearful of some thing? We often fear being afraid of something for example as children we fear the dark so when its time to go to bed we are already fearful for the light to be turned out and isn't that actually the action of fearing our fears?
For me fear actually can be a motivator which helps me to search for solutions so I do not live in a state of perpetual fear. (smiles)

I read a book by sebastian faulkes called human traces a novel about the start of psychiatry. the original pioneers thought that there was something in the process of humanising and getting enlarged brains that meant some of us were paying heavily for the self awareness-
I think the fear of fear has no function, and their explanation the most logical I have heard just an evolutionary blip like dodo's.
when you consider that 1 in 4 of us at any one time has a mental health problem - not being able to cope with our own minds -then we would seem rather a mistake

If my fear is fear, it's still fear. Fear is part of the flee or fight response of survival, which is pretty important. It got us this far in evolution, but now that we are completely evolved in consciousness, fear is a reaction that people need to get under control, especially when I'm walking around in public and people react like I'm about to attack them. I mean, how stupid is that, when I am not menacing or threatening them or pointing a weapon at them, at least not at the time...lol.

Um. Well. It seems you have thought this through. Living in the 21st century, I would say that the answer is basically YES. We do not put ourselves in fearsome situations very often. Most humans are only put in fear of their lives once or twice before they die. But most people live lives of quiet desperation anyway, afraid of all kinds of things that will never come to pass. Such fear is needless and purposeless. Truly, most of us only fear being afraid. Too bad. The world might be a better place with more courage.

the point of fear?
most of the time fear is a bad thing. it keeps us from doing things that we can accomplish as individuals, as a community, and as a world. fear of progression. fear of commitment.
but sometimes a little fear is a good thing. fear of going down a dark alley in the middle of the night... for example.

Fear is a survival tool. It tells us when something isn't right and makes us more aware of our surroundings so we don't fall off the roof or walk into the woods at night with wild animals all around.

FEAR- F- feeling E-everything A-around R- alRight? It is a natural to feel fear, but I like the old saying from Gladiator about death smiles at us all, all one can do is smile back.

If your fear is fear itself, you are greatly contradicting yourself. It's like saying, "I lie every time I say something."
There is no point of fear. Fear is like a black spot on a clean piece of paper. It is unneeded, furthermore it cripples us as living beings.

Fear keeps us from doing some insane things.
Its like a strong doubt, but attached to the risk of losing life.
Good to have.
