Should a cancer patient avoid heating pads and electric massage pads?

I have heard that if you have cancer you can't use any type of chair massage cushions or electric heating pads for lower back for example. Is that true and why?

Some doctors think healthy people shouldn't use them either. There are concerns about such close exposure to electromagnetic radiation.

I think that may be overly cautious, but there could be something to it.

Cancer patients? I can't think of why they should avoid it.

Never heard that one. I'd think anything that makes someone with cancer feel good shouldn't be avoided!

The cancer patient in question should check with his/her oncologist if he/she wants to use a heating pad or chair massage. The oncologist for the person is the only person qualified to say if this is a bad thing because it may depend on the treatment and type of cancer.

This sounds like a great gift, very thoughful, but think about your grandmothers cognitive ability, would she fall asleep on it? This can cause burns and skin darkening, due to the break down of red blood cells when exposed to heat for to long, You shouldn't use more then 15 to 20 minutes of heat at a time. What about a professional traveling masseuse that can visit her in her home. This isn't too expensive, about 30 dollars for 30 minutes or 50 for one hour, those are the rates in my area (upstate NY), they can compete with mortar and brick places because they don't have the overhead of a building. And the social aspect of seeing someone and talking to them is great for elderly people, but you should do this if your grandmother is okay with people touching her (she does not have to be naked) also is her skin intact and not tender? Call one up and find someone you trust (interview them, see if they have worked with geriatrics). It is really good for therapy for the body and soul.

I have a rare type of cancer and my doctor has told me to stay away from massage therapy especially in the area where the tumor is.He said that it should never be rubbed. My tumor is in the liver.

I don't think that's true, my grandmother used heating pads during her chemo, though that was in the 80s. Though nether electronic device will interfere with the treatment, itself. Maybe they meant during the hours in which you're actually have the treatment preformed on you?

  • I never heard anything like that. During radiation therapy, I was told that my diet and lifestyle could stay the same as usual.

Of course, you should talk to a physician before you do anything you think may impact on your health.

During treatments I didn't give a damn, I just wanted some relief from the pain so I never did ask or look up the answer.
