How come whenever I do alot of crunches my stomach gets bigger?

For the past week I've been doing 165 crunches a day. I thought it would make my abs more defined and maybe a little, I dunno, flatter? But instead my stomach has grown bigger... I look pregnant when my stomach is relaxed, and it hurts like a ***** to have to suck it in (which I had to do all day long)

Why is my stomach getting bigger? Will it eventually not get bigger? are my abs ever going to get more defined and make my stomach flatter?

Update:

I do at least an hour of cardio a day and have a pretty good diet (vegan), but I want to define my abs.

Funny, this happened to me the other day.I did various Plank exercises and the next day my stomach looked bloated. I know why this happens I just dont know how to explain it. But you're not getting fat or anything. And your stomach will go back down to normal. Also, you're not going to get abs from doing crunchs everyday( maybe when you already have them, you can start doing them everyday). You need to do cardio, eat right, and only do ab workouts 3/4 days a week. It's pointless for you to do them everyday. They need time to rest and restore themselves. I have very hard abs...i just need to do some more cardio so I can actually see them more lol. Btw, stop doing crunch. It's a waste of energy and bad for your back. Do Plank exercises. SO MUCH BETTER. Works more than just your upper abs. Also, make sure you are eating PROTEIN!!!... I am vegan too. Look on www.vitaminshoppe.com for Isopure Whey protein...the liquid form. Taste good. Has 40g of protein. 176 calories. 0 sugar. 0 carbs.

Crunches build muscle and your stomach muscles have shortened and thickened from all those crunches. It's the same type of result when someone does lots of lunge or squats for their legs. A person's leg muscles get bulkier or expand. For that reason, it is suggested for a person to do leg stretches before and after. You need to do stomach stretches. By the way, pilates or yoga is perfect to lengthen all the mucles in the body, including stomach muscles.

Crunches can be a hypertrophic exercise (your muscles actually getting bigger).

Man (or woman) cannot live by anaerobic exercise alone. The best way to flatten that stomach is to watch what you eat and do cardio. Then focus on your crunches/abdominal work.

well you could be starting to bloat. is your period coming?

if so then try doing the crunches when your periodisnt on the way.

if not, just keep doing the crunches. results will show, but it takes a while. :)

It is bigger because you are only building muscle and not burning fat. If you go running that will give u the desired effect.
