If your laptop has a VGA output, and if your TV has a VGA input, then you should use a VGA cable to connect your computer to your TV. If both devices have a DVI or HDMi port, then you should use it.

You'll NEVER want to connect two powered sources together. That's how you make a short circuit. You "may" be able to get a USB cable that works for transferring, and that "may" work. If you have an AppleTV, you can throw everything in iTunes, and that should work. You can also do similar things with WD media player live. Your best bet, may be to get a NAS (network attached storage) and throw everything in there. - 17R3W

HDMI would be best if both tv and pc had it. if not use vga (15 pin) to DVI if you have DVI on your tv. again if you don't get yourself a pc to tv converter. this will let you go vga to component/composit/s-video

Any normal cable with prongs with the TV and an USB for the computer.
