How many atheists believe the world will end in 2012?

I am just curious. It's not hard to find vitriol postings in YA denouncing the existence of God for lack of evidence. Yet, postings about the end of the world, and the existence of aliens are treated as absolute truths despite the fact that there is even less evidence to support these beliefs. Why is that?

Update:

Ick, I can't believe I asked a 2012 question. I think I'll go take a shower.

That's kinda like asking how many bridge players think the world will end in 2012. It's not like they are really related. But atheists are skeptical of religion, and tend to be skeptical of other things as well that people claim without proof, so probably not many of them have fallen for that crap.

Of course not. The Mayan calendar comes to an end, supposedly, on 21 December 2012. The calendar on my wall comes to an end ten days later. I'll get a new calendar for 2013 and the Mayans would have made a new calendar had they not been slaughtered by the Spanish. Strange that the Mayans could see the end of the world coming but completely missed the Spanish.

Well i used to be Atheist under the influence,,, but i went to an Acquire the Fire concert...stuff happened and now im not atheist lets just say that

First off it's not just atheists that believe the world will end, it's other people that believe the Myan calender or whatever it was called. Also i have a very Catholic friend who believes we will all die. But then again she's on crack so u never know with her...:)

I would think that there are very few atheists who believe in this 2012 nonsense. The reason should be clear. They got to the point of rationality where they recognized that God doesn't exist. For the same reason, they will be reluctant to believe in *anything* which sounds implausible and which comes from unreliable sources. Then they check it out and learn the facts.

Well, that's the way I did it, anyway.

No that many but i believe it will happen but not like nostradamus. but the earth warm up losing ice capes. thing like that but um did you watch the nostradamus 2012 thing on the history channel. well that because of the moon the earth does not spin up and down. the earth turn 1degree every year well we are so close to the what it called umm well it does not matter but it will most likely turn out as global warming but hotter.

I'm atheist, and I still believe something will happen. Nothing having to do with religion. Just humanities selfishness taking over and will doom us all. I do believe in astrological predictions and things that happen on the earth. There is thoughts that there will be a shift in the earths mantle, that would cause all kinds of natural disasters. And there is the alignment of Earth, The sun and the center of the universe. all supposed to happen that year. So if it isn't ourselves i think we'll be screwed anyways. But I have an open mind about anything. I hope nothing like that happens. I'd rather live.. Safely

i'm with Brant on the whole "atheists are more skeptical" argument.

religion teaches people to believe things WITHOUT thinking about them. I still remember sitting in Sunday School when I was about 6 and listening to the teacher tell me how a talking snake told Eve that she had a "right pretty mouth" or something... i dunno... i was a precocious child (mom defines "precocious" as a pain in the keester)

    "Say what? A snake talked?"

"It wasn't a snake, it was Satan."

"Oh, well, THAT makes sense, then... doesn't the whole thing seem kinda KINKY to you?"

"Shut up, kid, you are supposed to be six."

    Thus ended my religious training.

Do they have problems like this in Islamic schools?

"Say what? He cut the Moon in half?"

    "It went right back together."

"Oh, well, that's okay, then... Hey, doesn't the whole thing seem kinda KINKY..."

    "Infidel!"

    I guess not.

Most likely not very many. But then again there are idiots no matter what people believe.

    Source(s): I'm an atheist and I don't believe.
