Having shadow problems......can you help me out?

The last few pictures sets I have taken have a shadow around people. I am not sure what is causing it. My husband thinks I have a setting on the camera wrong but I am not sure. I never use to have this problem. Anywho the camera is a Nikon D40. Any tips would be wonderful =}

    There are people here who might be able to help if you uploaded an example and gave us a link. A shadow is usually caused by on-board flash, especially when used in the vertical position. Post a picture and maybe someone can offer suggestions rather than blindly guessing.
