Utah Utes. Deserving or not?

Ok the Utes go 13-0 in division 1 football. Played 4 of the top ten teams in America and beat them. Played #4 Alabama, the #1 team in America for weeks, in the Sugar Bowl and spanked them. The final polls have them at #2 in the country although the #1 Team, Florida has 1 loss.

I ask you does Utah deserve to be #1 in the country?

Without the advantage of a viable playoff system, I would have to make a subjective decision. The BCS is only as accurate as the information fed to it., and of course when

humans judgment is involved there is always room for error.

The BCS can say all they want about their scientific computations but it really doesn't mean a thing. The games still have to be played "ON THE FIELD".

Having said this and since we will never really know who can beat who, I will gladly add fuel to the fire and say yes, Utah deserves to be #1. After all, they are the only unbeaten team left in division 1A.

Don't look for a playoff system any time in the near future. There is far too much money to be made by the major bowls.

    No.

First off, Utah has not played 4 of the top 10 teams in the country. Over the course of the season they played three teams that were ranked at the time of the game (Alabama #4, TCU #11, and BYU #16).

Im not sure why everyone keeps saying Utah "spanked", "destroyed", or any other adjective like that Alabama. Utah jumped out to an early lead, then hung on for dear life. After the first 10 minutes of the game they lost 17-10 to a team that was missing a top 5 draft pick and had two of thier starting linemen playing in position. Every team in the top 10 would have a chance at winning that game. Florida beat Bama without Percy Harvin (172 yds TD in the national title / TD in 15 consecutive games).

Secondly, Utah needed the TCU kicker to miss more than one field goal to pull that game out in the end. The only reason this conversation is because the Ole Miss kicker actually made his kick (to beat Florida). They barely beat 4-8 New Mexico. They barely beat the worst team in Michigan Wolverine history.

What they did was worthy of a BCS birth and a top 5 ranking but not a national title. If Boise State (also undefeated at the end of the regular season) had beaten TCU and gone undefeated would you be arguing for them on the bases of no losses? Doubt it...

    USC is a better team.

    Oklahoma is a better team.

    Florida is a better team.

    Texas is a better team.

Going undefeated doesnt get you a number 1 ranking. Being the best team around does.

They deserved a shot to be #1. We need some form of a play off system. Do you know that 2/3 of the voting that gets a team into the national championship game is done by humans? Many of those voting have been honest enough to say that they never saw Utah play, even on film. What kind of system is that? However, I don't know that I am convinced that Utah would beat Florida. But they did deserve a shot.

As much as any team this season. The argument is the weaker conference. But look at some of the weak teams the others play. USC in their conference had Wash and Wash St, 2 of the worst teams in college football. Also Stanford is still not great UCLA was awful and lost to Org ST.

Florida played a bad Tenn bad Auburn and lost at home to Ole miss. Also they played Haw, Citadel (seriously) and a much weakened rest of SEC conference.

Texas I cant argue due to my disdain of the BIg 12.

But Utah won. The games may be ugly but its sports you can't always dominate. Winning is the goal. College football is all about perception not reality. People said Utah couldn't hang with Bama now there saying it with USC, Florida and Texas. If you say it once and proven wrong why say it about another team?

Florida beat more ranked teams, played a tougher schedule and more games than Utah did. They also won the National Championship game. Plus, do you REALLY think that if Florida played Utah that Utah would win? Personally I don't. Utah certainly played great football this year and had a hell of a season. They are deserving of a whole lot of credit, but not the #1 ranking.

the 1984 BYU Cougars won the national championship because they were "the only undefeated team" in the nation. the best team BYU played in 1984 was 6-5 Michigan in the Holiday Bowl, and they needed a last minute TD drive to win that game. Utah, on the other hand ..... beat Oregon St, Alabama and BYU .... MUCH tougher competition than BYU played in 1984. if BYU was deserving in 1984, than Utah is most certainly deserving in 2008.

No the number one team should be and will be for the remainder of next season FLorida. Im a Texas fan and I know if Utah played florida or oklahoma or texas they would be blown out. They cant compete against those tough D's! They proved that vs. TCU! They should be number 4 at most. Texas should be 2 and ok 3 !

honestly i think that they have a legitimate reason to be angry because who knows how Florida would have played against Utah this is exactly why college football is so retarted, if they went to a playoff system we would have a legit champion and teams like Utah wouldnt get left out of the picture.

  • 1 decade ago

No! TCU and BYU are in their conference. They did not play one top 25 team outside of their conference.

At least TCU played Oklahoma. They lost, but they played them. Utah played no one.

If they want respect then they need to beat a team like Alabama or Oklahoma in the regular season. Then this is not an issue.
