Probably because they've never met any other Beth's who just had Beth as a name. I know a number of girls named Beth, but they are all short for Elizabeth, Bethan or Bethany.
My friend Angie has the same issue - her name is Angie, not sort for Angel, Angela, Angelica, Angelina, or anything else. Her parents just liked the name.

I think Beth is perfectly eligible (and indeed is!) as a name in its own right. But unfortunately the reason why you get so much hassle is that it can be short forms of Bethanya, Bethany and Elizabeth.
I expect in years to come babies currently christened Ellie will be asked if it is short for Eleanor or Emily so hold on in there!

I like beth as a name on it's own I prefer to Bethany or Elizabeth.
I know of a boy named Danny (not short for Daniel) and a girl called Vicki (not short for Victoria).
People just go with the usual, why they say it's impossible is really beyond me

I have never known anyone to disbelieve 'Beth' as a name in it's own right...
I have a friend Beth, who is actually Christened Bethan and noone believes her, they say "no, you must be a beth or a bethany...."
I think people get stuck in their own ideas, whether that is a good or bad thing remains to be seen!!

It's the same name with Carrie, and I'm sure others. I mean, I think people are just curious and have to ask, especially if all the Beth's they've known had been a nickname.

It is, people just ****u*me that your name is Elizabeth, Bethany or Bethan because Beth was an nickname-that or you were named for the Semitic letter... Just remember-you can call yourself whatever you like-you don't need validation from anybody at all (except your Y!A buddies, hehehehe)!

Probably cos i dono nearly every bodys whos names Beth is shortened from Bethany or Elizabeth.
People might think ur lying cos u may not like ur real name or something.

Eh, people just see Beth as a nickname more nowadays.
The two girls in my classes who were called Beth were named Bethany and Elizabeth.
