Debbie, Deb or Deborah? Please help me choose a professional name?

I'm graduating this spring, and I've got a decision to make. I've used all three of the variations for my name over the years, and I'm comfortable with all of them- different people in my life use different names for me, depending on where they know me from. I'm just not sure which name to use in my professional life. It's worth noting that I'm going into a male-dominated field and I want to be taken seriously.

So my question is- what do you think of when you hear the names Debbie, Deb, and Deborah? Which sounds most/less like a scientist's name?

I don't know why I think this but Deb seems the least like a scientist to me. I like Deborah.

SO WHAT IS YOUR MIDDLE NAME? YOU KNOW IN THE NED I LIKED MY FULL LENGTH NAME OVER THE LITTLE NICKNAMES I GOT FROM IT. AND DEBORAH IS A BEAUTIFUL NAME. BUT HERE ARE A FEW SUGGESTIONS. Deborah The bee, an industrious woman. A biblical name. Ranked #360 of the last decade and #617 of 2003 Origin: Hebrew Gender: Girl # Alternatives: Debbie # Debby # Debra # Devora # Devora # Devorah # Devorah # Devore # Debin # Devin # Dee

Deborah. Deb is fine too, but I find it unprofessional when people ask to be called by childhood nicknames, esp. the ones ending in "ie" sound like Jimmy or Davey.

Put Deborah on your resumes and use that name to introduce yourself. It is more professional. When coworkers and bosses become more comfortable with you, they could use Debbie or Deb.

Definitly Deborah, because it sounds very professional.

i vote deborah, because it sounds most serious

when you get to know someone better he or she would probably call you deb because it's easier and friendlier i guess if you're friends

i recommend introducing yourself as deborah at first though!

This may sound a bit silly, but this is the truth:

    In your 20s: Debbie

    30 - 40s: Deborah

    40s - retirement: Deb

    That's the way it works.

By the way, crazyem, what about Jimmy Carter?

  • Debbie is more of a nickname and so is Deb.If you want to feel sophisticated then you can pick Deborah to also feel professional.
