Is it rude to be up-front with a photographer?

I'm going to take my 9 month old son to have pictures taken, just like I always have. If anyone knows about taking pictures at a portrait studio, you know they take several poses and offer huge packages that (in my case) can be upwards of $500+. I'm only going in for the $9.95 Special...regardless of how many great poses there are..that's just all I can afford and am willing to spend on photos. Is it rude to tell the photographer that upfront, or when they're in "sell" mode trying to get you to make extra purchases? Has anyone just been plain and up front?

Update:

I know its their job, I just feel guilty at the fact that I'm withholding that I only plan to make a small purchase when they are going through all the trouble.

Is it very up front of them to offer a special deal strictly to get you into the studio so they can try their high pressure sales tactics to get you to buy more pictures than you can afford?

I wouldn't worry about hurting his feelings, just tell him straight out you came for the special and if you find you have more money at a later date you'll come back for some of the other prints.

Maybe just tell him before hand so he doesn't get the impression you are going to spend $500. That way, he won't take 25 poses, he may take 4-5.

You can be upfront, just don't be rude. Just nicely decline, "No thank you, I only need a few." or "Thanks for the offer, if I had more money, I would definately do that."

Remember, it is YOUR pictures, so don't feel guilty. Just tell him before hand, and he won't have to go through all the trouble.

Good Luck, Hope Your Son Takes Some Good Poses :]

I wouldn't say it upfront. They may be less than willing to get the best photo possible. I got a nice photo of my dog and I last year. It came free. The next began at $35. Take the special.

tell them upfront. be polite and nice. look guilty a little. and also, they don't have to go through the whole sing and dance if you just tell them upfront. that way they can get more customers instead of taking forever telling you about there deal.

It's not rude to just take the special, and there is no need to apologize. Choose the one you want and say no thank you to the rest.

It is not rude as you are the customer and the customer is always right.
