Can anyone tell me which large dog breed would get along best with small dog breeds?

I currently have a full grown 4lb male yorkie who lives in doors and I am interested in getting a larger dog for my backyard. However, the yorkie would come in frequent contact with the large dog so to prevent any injuries I would like to know which large breeds would work well and be non-aggressive with small breeds. Also, I am looking to adopt this dog, so as much information on as many breeds would be helpful as you never know what will be available to adopt. Thanks for your input!

Update:

Additionally, I have an acre sized back yard with a large screened in back porch and a 6 foot tall security fence. The adopted dog would not be left out to run free and would have a large shelter from the weather so problems with "puppy mill" theives and animal rescue should not be a problem as the dog would be properly contained and well taken care of.

If you are getting the new dog as a puppy you should be safe with most breeds as it will grow up with your yorkie. It's said that you should be more careful with sighthounds and bull terriers as they may see smaller animals as prey but my friend has two greyhounds and three cats and they all live together quite happily. Think more about your lifestyle and what would fit in best some breeds can go for hours whereas others would be happy with one walk a day.

Don't leave any dog out in back. No shelter or rescue will adopt a dog to you if that's your plan.

Dogs left in back get taken by Puppy Mills and Dogfighters that scope out neighborhoods.

As for what breeds will get along with your dog, it's not a breed issue. It varies from dog to dog.

Edit: Again, no shelter or rescue is going to adopt to you if you keep the dog outdoors. They will only adopt to people who have them indoors, except to run around in the yard every day for a while. But if you aren't planning on letting the dog live in the house as a part of your family, they won't adopt to you.

Lots of small breeds do well, in fact, most do. I'd just suggest getting a dog that is over 10 lbs. Very fragile small dogs can get injured in rough play with big dogs, even if they get along.

Why get another dog that's going to be outside most of the time and thus unsupervised? Unless there is a VALID reason for the larger dog to be outside bring him inside with the yorkie. And as pointed out most places will not adopt out a dog just for it to end up outside the majority of the time.

Any breed can be good but its best to avoid any dog with a high prey drive.

I have a large jumping jack, boisterous chocolate lab, Kahlua, who's 3 yrs. old, & my daughter & her family have a little chihuahua, Tito, that's 10 months old. They live next door to us so the 2 doggies are constantly running back & forth, & are together all the time.

They have gotten along terrificly since day one! Kahlua is a female & Tito (named for the boxer...LOL!) is a male, & so Kahlua has always been like a mother hen, & very protective of Tito. She has to rein him in at times because being a Chihuahua in itself means he's overly rambunctious to say the least.

They have a ball together & have never had any problems at all! I think that a Lab is the best all around dog for young children, well children of ALL ages... ;~)... & small dogs. They even get along well with cats after the initial territorial meanderings that cats have to go through...

    Hope this helps!

We have a 2lb chihuahua and a 20lb chocolate lab pup. They get along great and even play tug of war together but we just have to be careful that the lab dosent accidentaly hurt the chihuahua. Its hard to keep them seperated. They love playing together and I'd say the chihuahua shows much more aggresion than the lab but they even snuggle while sleeping. No worries, just keep an eye on your dogs and go for a family dog like a Golden Retreiver, Choco, Black, or yellow lab, or a dog that dosent require to much excersize and makes a good quiet pet.

Honestly small breeds are more aggressive with large dogs. Golden Retriever, however giving you a breed doesn't mean they wont get along. You do have to put effort on your part to actually train and acclimate them both.

If you have a high enough fence, I have a husky that plays with my new puppy who is a "Pomchi" and about 3 lbs right now. She does not really pay much attention to him, but when he plays with her, she plays back and they sleep together at night :) Also, golden retrievers and labs I have noticed are always good dogs with people and other animals.

As long as the bigger dog was raised around other dogs it shouldn't matter the breed. But if they get rough together keep them supervised in the yard.

I have a westie, which is about 15 pounds. She LOVES golden retrievers. She actually loves all big dogs, but I've noticed our neighbors' and friends' that have retrievers LOVE her back and they play great together.
