How do I replace an old 2 pronged electrical cord on my 1951 refrigerator with a 3 prong (grounded) cord?

I have a 1951 Gibson Refrigerator.

The fridge is in almost new condition with the exception of the electrical cord that plugs into the wall.

The cord is an "ungrounded" 2-prong which needs to be replaced with a "grounded" 3-prong.

How do I pull this off safely if there are only 2 wires connected to the current cord that is coming from inside the fridge?

Thanks.

Thanks.

You buy a three prong plug from a home center the white and black lines connect just like they did with the two prong plug and the green ground line is attached to the case with a metal screw.

Purchase a completely new cord (with a three prong plug) with three wires, white/black/green. Wire the white and black to the wiring inside the fridge. White to white and black to black. Find something metal to screw the green wire to.

Of course this is only gong to be effective if your receptacles are grounded. The third (green) wire has always been a mystery to me. I'll concede that it is something of a safety feature but the white wire and the green wire both screw onto the same ground bar inside your electrical panel. Most people aren't aware of that and think the green wire is the be all end all for keeping something grounded and it just ain't so.

  • If the original cord is in good condition and you are just trying to ground it you can leave the old cord and just get length of wire and secure one end to the frig frame and the other to the screw in the middle of the outlet cover and you will be grounded without touching any of the original wiring.

Hi this can be done. the third wire is a ground wire. attach it to the metal at any screw point and this will act as your fram ground.

I would check with an electrical supply store. Or an electrician.

You need to buy an adapter.
