Dress code in Egypt for women?
Please advise on what is appropriate. I def want to respect the culture, but am a little confused about the different areas. We'll be going to Cairo and Hurghada. As Hurghada is at the coast, I can't really imagine havin to cover up though??? We won't be staying at a hotel, so aren't gonna be in a "tourist bubble". What's appropriate in the 'public' areas of Hurghada? i.e. in the streets and at the beach?

Wear absolutly what you like, just nothing too revealing, ofcourse you can show hair, a lot of Egyptian women/girls show their hair. Also we have christian Egyptians that ofcourse won't cover theirs. Don't wear anything above the knee or anything showing a part of the chest and you'll be fine. That is for Cairo, and about Hurghada wear what like, go to beaches with two piece swim suits, whatever. I think also they have topless beaches there, I wouldn't recommend going there as I am against the idea but if it's your thing then go for it.

I'm from the UK and went to Egypt last year, you DO NOT need to cover your whole body up or hair. We wore normal holiday clothes, there are plenty of tourists and they all dress like they would for any holiday. When you go to Hurghada again wear your normal holiday clothes but make sure when you go to areas where there are a lot of local people that you don't have a top on showing too much cleavage or a very very short skirt/shorts on, out of respect and so you don't get people staring at you!
Hope that helped

i have been to Egypt many times. in cairo i would recommend ordinary summer clothes, short sleeves rather than sleeveless and trousers / skirt not shorts. not low cut. but in hurghada, in the tourist areas you can be less conservative, i am not sure about the beaches there and how public they are, but topless is a no no. however shorts and vests are more acceptable in tourist beach areas. If you are staying with egyptians then try to cover up when you are with them especailly when you are with the men.

honey, we have millions of tourist from all over the world coming to Egypt every year, and they are wearing whatever they feel like... and yes they are completely safe..
you seem a nice caring person for asking this question! so, dress whatever you like in Hurghada cause you know its by the sea, so anything is ok, shorts, tank tops, bikinis ,anything
in Cairo, you still wear whatever you like but i guess you just can't wear your hot-short or something completely see-through in the streets! you got what i mean? its a big crowded city, so a jeans or a comfy cotton pants or knee length skirts with any top will be fine.. cause hot-short is eye-catching..
i hope i helped!!

Cairo may be the capital of Egypt and among the largest cities in Africa and the Middle East and a great place to visit; discover more with hotelbye . On the Nile water, Cairo is fabled for its history, maintained in the fantastic medieval Islamic city and Coptic internet sites in Old Cairo. The Egyptian Museum in the centre of city is vital see, with its countless Ancient Egyptian artefacts since no trip to Cairo will be complete with out a trip to the Giza Pyramids, and to the regional Saqqara Pyramid Complex. In Cairo you can see: The Pyramid of Cheops (also named the Great Pyramid or Pyramid of Khufu), the greatest pyramid of the Giza party, and its interior of slim articles may be investigated, though there isn't much to see, except a plain tomb chamber with an empty sarcophagus. Immediately behind the Great Pyramid could be the Solar Boat Museum, which displays among the ceremonial solar barques unearthed in the area that has been carefully restored to their original glory. Further south on the plateau is the Pyramid of Chephren (also referred to as the Pyramid of Khefre), that has an internal tunnel area that may be entered.

hey , egypt especially cairo sees tourists alot . You do not need to cover your hair unless you visit mosques (for sightseeing) . egypt is very hot and dusty so dont wear open toe shoes , linen/cotton trousers and a long sleeved tunic / top / kaftan top are perfect and practical . long skirts are good if you like that or even long summer dress with a light cardigan to cover arms and chest . Most things are fine as some girls christian and muslim dress very western , most egyptian young women and girls dress western . Just bear in mind no shorts or miniskirts or clevage and upper arms to be safe would be respectful and to avoid unwanted attention . Also if you are going with a boyfriend or male he is fine to wear shorts or trousers , but he should not walk around without a t-shirt . i hope you enjoy your stay take many pictures and have a good time . Welcome

A modest dress style is very much appreciated in Egypt, thus in public places it's a good idea to wear lightweight cottons which come up to the neck and go down well below the knees.
