Who's ready for Season 5 of Lost?
What do you want to know most at this point in time? And what's your theory or theories about what's going on? Is there anything you don't like?
I just finished rewatching season 4 on dvd. It was quite an awesome season. Of course the producers are outlining that season 5 will be why the Oceanic 6 need to get back to the island with less flashforward and less flashbacks, so it's going to prove to be an action packed season.
Questions lingering: What happened to the survivors, others, anyone on the island? What were the terrible things that happened after the Oceanic 6 left that Locke reportedly alluded to? What happened to Faraday and the some odd survivors stranded on the raft? Is Jin dead? Will Ben kill Penny? What is Desmond's action or reaction to Ben's agenda? Why can't someone who moved the island never return? Did Widmore once move the island like Ben did? Are the Oceanic 6 choosing sides? Is Sun siding with Widmore against Ben and Jack? Who does Claire really not want to return, the apparent baby Aaron, Locke, or someone else? Why do Kate and Hurley individually have no desire to return? Why does Jack long to return?
Here's my basic theory of just what's kind of going on right now. I think Widmore had moved the island before and was Ben's predessesor. And he has got that longing that Jack has to return to the island for whatever reason. Ben however clearly points out that anyone who moves the island can't return and has thus set out to protect it knowing neither he nor Widmore should return by the "rules". Ben, however has an agenda to eliminate Widmore's people and ultimately Penny to get back at Widmore for killing his daughter. He wants the Oceanic 6 to all return together with Locke to restore secrecy and peace to the island. Locke is not truly dead, he just needs to be returned to the island to awaken. Either Locke is covering up that it is a suicide or he was taken out by Widmore or strangely by Ben. Really there's too much more to get into, so I'll leave it at that with the theories.
If there's anything I don't like, it's how Jack was convinced that he had to lie to the world about how they survived to protect the island. This is the only thing written poorly in Lost. It doesn't make sense, and that's in a bad way. In the finale Jack points out to the people on the raft he needs to lie to protect the survivors because bad people are looking for them. Well the bad people already know that they exist on the island, and if anything else Jack always had a mentality to get everyone off the island. Why not tell the world the survivors are still out there, what does HE really care about the secrecy of the island? Why is HE so convinced to save the integrity of the island? For anyone else, Ben, Locke, even Hurley it would make more sense, but not Jack. At least not before he realized he needed to go back. There's no motive for it when he decides to keep it a secret, not to mention he hates Locke and thinks he's crazy. This just didn't sit well with me and now it just bothers me after having watched season 4 entirely twice now.
Season 5 opens with the 2-hour episode "Because You Left/The Lie". I don't think they can fix the error, but I think they may try to explain things a little better. Don't get me wrong, this one little thing doesn't ruin Lost for me, nothing's perfect and Lost is probably the best show on TV now in terms of the writing/acting combination.

Well, hopefully they won't retcon the Jack thing that you don't like... but I have to say I slightly disagree with you. True, Widmore knows that these people are from the Island and blah blah blah, but my theory is that Jack is protecting the rest of the survivors from the rest of the world, not Widmore. If the rest of the world knew that there were more survivors they would want to know where they were, and more importantly the rest of the world would want to know what the hell is up with the wreckage on the bottom of the ocean, and who are all of the bodies?! This could possibly expose Widmore, or set him up for some sort of investigation... and it would be fishy if those that were investigating him started dying!
I don't think Jack really hates Locke, they just don't see eye to eye on things. Jack's judgment is just as fluid as Locke's, but he is a man of science while Locke is a man of faith.
But I totally agree with you about Widmore being Ben's predecessor. You are one of two people to agree with me. It makes perfect sense because he has been looking for the Island, but he knows of its existence. I do, however, think that Locke is dead in the flesh, but will 'come back' once he is returned to the Island. But I do think that Sawyer will be the next leader of the Others... but there is not enough space here to tell you why.
But as for your other questions...:
What happened to the survivors, others, anyone on the island?
--They are still on the Island, existing, but without Dharma supply drops!
What were the terrible things that happened after the Oceanic 6 left that Locke reportedly alluded to?
--I have no clue about this, but I have a feeling season 5 will answer all of these questions!
What happened to Faraday and the some odd survivors stranded on the raft?
--I think they were sucked in when the Island moved and are on the Island again. Its an approximation thing because the Hydra Island has to come too because we didn't see it when the Island disappeared.
Is Jin dead?
--I hope not, but Daniel Dae-Kim is not listed as a regular... But I do think he'll be back.
Will Ben kill Penny? What is Desmond's action or reaction to Ben's agenda?
--Ben won't kill her, but he will 'hire' Sayid to kill her. Then Sayid and Desmond will have some problems. With any luck she will survive, because I don't think Desmond could handle getting her back only to have someone he knows take her life.
Why can't someone who moved the island never return? Did Widmore once move the island like Ben did?
--I think the secret to the moving the Island/never returning thing has to do with the fact that the Island is impossible to find anyway! But I think that if Ben were to be with the Oceanic 6 (and maybe Desmond) and Locke's body then he could find the Island again because the Island wants the Oceanic 6 to return. And yes, I think that Widmore moved the Island before.
Are the Oceanic 6 choosing sides? Is Sun siding with Widmore against Ben and Jack?
--I don't think that there are 'sides'. Sun is manipulating Widmore and holding power over her father's head because she is angry at the loss of Jin and the way she has been treated (both on and off the Island). She is a very powerful character and there will be loads more from her. As for the rest of the Oceanic 6 choosing sides, I don't think so. They wanted to be rescued, but I don't think they realized how much they needed the Island. They left the Island to finish things in the real world, and now they have to return to fulfill their destiny there.
Who does Claire really not want to return, the apparent baby Aaron, Locke, or someone else?
--I do not think Claire meant Aaron at all. I think she meant Ben, because of the whole moving the Island thing. I personally think that Claire is dead and she is now a part of the Island.
Why do Kate and Hurley individually have no desire to return? Why does Jack long to return?
--I think Kate is afraid of her feelings for Sawyer and longs to be an honest citizen again, which is why she faced the music when it came to Wayne and settling down and not running anymore. Hurley actually thinks that he is crazy now and is still haunted by the numbers (and Charlie). They will come back! And as for Jack, he is turning into his father while he is off the Island, and nothing is going right for him. He is not important off the Island, he is no one and has nothing. On the Island he is a very important person and very valuable. And most importantly... on he Island he is not his father!
I can't wait for the season to begin... Only a week left... I seriously find myself giddy with anticipation!
