For Crocheters who CHOOSE TO KNOT...how do you knot your work? Which knots work for you, which knots do not?

I know a lot of crocheters and knitters are against knotting their work and that is fine. I don't always knot myself however when I need to I would like to know what knots work best.

Square knots are nice and less bulky however I am not having any luck with them. I have also tried the surgeons knot (basically the same, I know) but I need something...else.

Thanks

Update:

I work over my tails at the beginning and end of each color/ball for several inches and then trim the ends close to the work. My beginning and ending tails are woven into the work.

I wasn't sure what you meant by knotting your work! I thought you were working some kind of knots into crochet... I just didn't understand that one.

So you mean, when you join in another yarn, how do you do it? There are many different ways to join another ball of yarn, or another colour. You can try overlapping and working two yarns together for a few stitches -- that holds it securely. Or I like the Russian join a lot... takes longer to do, but really very neat and tidy join. If I can use it on the pattern, I will often alternate stitches with old-new yarns, and that holds it very well for me. Knots are not the best solution, unless it works with your design, or yarn texture.
