How Long Can a 92-Pound 90-year-old Live on OJ Alone?
My mother-in-law, who is 90, is in a nursing home and refusing food. She hasn't eaten since November 21, 2008. She only drinks orange juice and takes Tylenol to help her sleep. She doesn't want to do anything she used to love. I think she's given up - but don't know what to expect in terms of when she might die as a result of her only consuming OJ. Her advance directive says not to intervene in anything - but we still try to get her to eat something - she just makes a face and refuses. Anyone else had this happen and have an idea of what to expect? Thank you......

Orange juice is a good thing for her, unfortunately if she does not get something other than just orange juice she will not last too much longer. As you know the human body requires more than just juice to survive. Can you change the directive that is in effect? By what you have said it is possible she is rather depressed and this is probably the root cause as to why she seems to have given up. I am going to suggest you have a heart to heart discussion with her doctor.
