Computer repeatedly shuts down when starting up or at random times?
I have an HP Media Edition that is almost 3 years old. I have antivirus software and it does not appear to have any viruses. About 6 months ago, it started shutting down suddenly, usually soon after being started up. Sometimes it shuts itself down and immediately restarts. Sometimes it just freezes up and has to be turned off manually. Sometimes the screen just goes black and I have to turn it off. Sometimes it will not complete the startup before shutting down again. Sometimes it starts beeping after shutting down. If it goes on hibernate, it can hibernate for several days, but as soon as I try to use it again, it shuts itself down. Usually after restarting, I will get an error message that says something like "Your system has recovered from a serious error. Please send a report to Microsoft. To see what the report contains, click here." Then it directs me to the Microsoft website and some sort of troubleshooting, which I tried a few times, but it never did any good. I have tried defragging, but it did not help.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is before I have to go out and buy a new computer? Thanks.

There are two primary causes for this:
1) Your OS is corrupted. Back up all of your files you want to keep. Use the restore CD to completely restore your system.
2) Your computer is overheating.
Take it to competent professional to be cleaned and diagnosed. They should be able to isolate the problem quickly and offer solutions.

It sounds to me like the ram may be going bad, I have personally seen
this before, try replacing the ram first. If this doesn't solve the problem then it is most likely in the OS and reformatting and reinstalling the OS should help.

Could be excess heat. Make sure that all of your fans are working and that the airways are not impeded.
There could be bad RAM. If there are mulitple sticks of RAM in the computer try removing one and using the computer. If it still crashes, replace the one you removed and remove the second...repeat.
Your motherboard may be bad. Hope not.
