Does Anyone Know About Planes?

Like most people, I have watched the airplane go down in the Hudson River. It is said that the engines were wrecked by a flock of geese. It is also explained that birds of all sizes have been a danger to airplanes since the birth of aviation.

My question is, why isn't it possible to place some kind of a guard, a screen, to protect the engines from sucking up birds? Would it be possible to have a recording device that made some high pitched noise that would scare away every bird within miles? Why has this problem been left for so long without some kind of a solution? Since I know nothing about airplanes, I am depending upon the brains on this forum to give me some answers to my questions.

The optimal solution is the elimination of all avian species, but that is thoughtless and insensitive. Unfortunately preventive screening would reduce the engine performance. High pitch noise might scare the birds away from your plane, but where to? In front of another aircraft, most likely.

The best thing is to make the engines survive a bird strike. Thats what the engine designers do. Thats what human ingenuity always does, if it can't be avoided, be prepared to survive it.

That is why you have airbags in your car. It is impractical to develop and deploy a crash avoidance in a car, a little sense and a good head can avoid a car collision, but just in case...

Not all problems have practical solutions, a gaggle of geese is one of them, but we gotta live with that. Be assured that the best minds on this planet has been pondering over it, even before the first geese ever ventured into a working engine.

First of all, a bird would be shredded by the screens and go in to the engine anyway. and secondly, that would impede the airflow to the engines, making them less efficient.

p.s. this question has been asked several times in the last couple days so there may be more information there too if you want to look.

the engines need unrestricted airflow, the hi pitch device isn't any different than the noise from the engines, there are programs out there that take care of alot of things around airports and i'm sure laguadia(sic) has one but they were probably huddled around the fireplace.

you make some good points, but using something to cover the engines would render them useless, and i previously answered someone who said why not use mesh wire, but using that could cause unthinkable damage, the engines could suck anything in its path.

I don't think the "high-pitch" noise would scare away the birds and im pretty sure it would interfere with something be it on the ground or in the air.

Anyways im sure somebody else will give a more detailed explanation.

NO screen will not stop a 12lb bird at over 150 miles per hour.

It would interrupt the air flow into the engine and decrease thrust.
