Drinking laws vary by STATE. the only thing thats the same in the US, is its illegal PURCHASE alcohol before you are 21.
consumption varies.
from wikipedia:
14 states and the District of Columbia ban underage consumption outright, 19 states do not specifically ban underage consumption, and an additional 17 states have family member and/or location exceptions to their underage consumption laws. It is an argument in this country whether the age should be 18 or 21 since 18 is the age of majority in most states....
31 states have family member and/or location exceptions to their underage possession laws.

It depends on where you live but it sounds like the drinking age around your area is 21, meaning it is illegal for anyone under 21 to buy alcoholic drinks nor drink it anywhere. A lot of people drink at home and break the law, but if you get caught, you will be in deep trouble with authorities and consequences will not be easy.

In the US it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to drink alcoholic beverages, no matter if they are @ home or not.
I believe that this may have started with parents telling their children that was "their" rule, so that they were sure that if their children were drinking that they would be doing so in the safety of their parents home.
Unfortunately most teens drink with friends and that meant that the parents were supplying alcohol to minors, in their home.
This is only an urban myth and is not in any way the actual law.

The legal drinking age HAS now been raised to 21.
Before the raise it was OK for 16 year olds to drink at home, but you had to be 18 to buy alcohol. So i think now, yes, you have to be 18 to drink at home.
