Question about timing gear marks on SBC 350?

I have a 78 Camaro. Holley 650 cfm carb, Edelbrock intake, Flowtech long headers, Cherry Bomb Glass pack dual exhaust directly bolted on the header collectors, Accel plugs and wires. Car was running good, but engine was flat due to flat lobe on camshaft. I am replacing the camshaft, lifters, timing chain and gears. During disassembly I noticed the timing marks were different than as depicted in my Chilton guide. The Chilton guide shows the Cam gear with the mark on the bottom (6:00 position) of the gear and the Crank gear with it's mark on top (12:00 position) of the gear. When I was taking the motor apart, I noticed the timing marks were both aligned at the 12:00 position. (Cam gear mark at top and Crank gear mark at the top).

MY QUESTION, Should I put the car back together the same way it was running before OR should I put it back together the correct Chilton way? Just wanting to make sure the valves and lifters will be in synch if I change it to the Chilton directions.

on all small block chevys the marks go facing each other like at the top gear or cam gear goes at 6 oclock and the crank gear at 12 oclock, that's the correct way to install them, good luck.

Both answers are correct above, but so you can understand better the Cam should be set at 6:00 and the crank should be set at 12:00 also don't do what a friend of mine did to his car!

DON'T USE A CROWBAR TO PUT IT ON !

It will be tight but will go on if everything is lined up right !

you are 180 degrees off.before you take the timing chain off put the marks at 6 and 12

if both shows 12 oclock then probably the chain slipped. it,s suppose to be 6 oclock and 12.
