well as far as this sleeve goes. well you should make sure that having a tattoo is something you actually like.
start with one, and then build on that. a sleeve doesn't have to be all one piece you can have multiple pieces that mesh together.
for designs. that is entirely up to you, i think that you should give it a lot of thought and consideration. you should pick something that is meaningful you. if you were to just go out and get at tattoo of a gorilla for the sake of the tattoo how much do you think you'd like it?
not very much. spend some time thinking about what you want.

I have Phil Ochs tattooed on my arm (folk singer) I also have "Never Die" and a rose tattooed across my toes, with a tigerbat above the toes on my left foot for Tiger Army. I see me getting a couple more musician tattoos. I have an Ochs lyric tattoed across the back of my neck (Sacred are the scars) and an Op Ivy lyric across the insides of both arms (It's beautiful I would say... I wouldn't have it any other way.) I'm thinking about a hot-rod culture tat, skulls and roses and a banner, gotta pick the lyric to go in the banner though. As it stands today, I'd probably choose "In death as in life, I will arise" or "My conscience carries the weight of blood."

Please dont do tribal that is so overdone, if you start at your hand (wrist) make sure you go all the way up to the shoulder cause if you go from wrist to elbow it will look odd, mine is getting done from elbow to shoulder since I work in a professional setting it will be easier tocover up. As far a s design I can only recommend getting something with meaning to you and that you can live with for the rest of your life. Good luck and just know that a piece that big will be pretty pricey.

Anything but tribal.
If you have no idea whatsoever as to what to get for a tattoo, maybe you should wait until you come up with something. I know how it is to want a tattoo because you want a tattoo, but you really should wait until you at least have an idea of what you want.

at 19, i'd def say don't do hand to elbow. thats really visible to be 19. and i don't know exactly what you mean by wrap around and then up from hand or elbow. but, you can look at brad pitt in any of the ocean's movies, he has a tribal design starting from his hand to his elbow. (again, i wouldn't recommend it), or the rock has one from his neck to his elbow. or ll cool j has a tat of a mic and then cord circles his arm and goes down to his hand. whatever you do, just think awhile before getting a really visible tattoo. jobs aren't normally cool with it. =). good luck!

Personally I love celtic knotwork and knotwork mixed with animal art (like in the Book of Kells). A celtic dragon or wolf intermingled with knotwork would be a great design for a large arm tattoo. The dragon is a symbol of strength and protection and the wolf is a symbol of strength and wisdom.

DO NOT GET TRIBAL! are you in a tribe? doubtful....so that's dumb. do some research. find out what YOU like. there's no reason to rush at all.
