Accommodations...Phasing from Elementary to Middle school?

My daughter is currently only in third grade, but we are looking forward so we can be prepared.

She is diagnosed with CAPD, ADD-inattentive type, and moderate-severe dyslexia. She is currently classified as OHI and get accommodations through her IEP. She is currently getting 60 min Language Arts and 45 min Math Resource Room help.

Now clearly in Middle School and on they cannot put kids in the small groups that they do in grade school to help them. And I assume that there is not the same teacher/aide to student ratio as there is in grade school. So I am wondering what some usual accommodations are for Middle and High School with kids like this. How easy is the transition for them from the cocoon of grade school to the BIG world of Middle School???? What kinds of thing are in place to help them with classes that are lecture based?????

Just looking for ideas of what to expect!!!

Thanks!

Update:

Pam...OHI, is "other health impaired"...just the way she is classified in the IEP...which is "Individual Education Plan"....neither of these are a diagnosis. And is is not out of control or has behavior problems. She has ADD, she is inattentive, not hyperactive. She just sometimes "zones out" while listening.

First breath in with the good and out with the bad. (very slowly) Then know that you have to take control. If as a parent, knows there's a problem FIGHT it all the way and don't give up. I noticed there's alot of diagnoses. Example: CAPO, ADD, OHI, IEP. Maybe the question is: Does my life style fit into my childs. Should I be taking more responsibility for her behavior. How much quality time do I spend listening? Parents these day's are so stressed, we can't seem to grasp whats really going on, so kids are becoming lables of all dissabilities. Im 54 and have finally ADMITED to myself I have ADHD. So anyway, your the best interpeter of your child. Unconditional spiritual know how and the willingness will, open a whole new world with your child.

Source(s): I have a few friends that actually drive me crazy with there OUT of control children. They have CAPO, ADD, OHI, IEP, NYPD, ADHD. Give me a break. When there chrildren are with me, I see none of it, until there mother walks through the door. EXPERIENCE!!!
  • Actually, from what I have seen by subbing, the students get just as much, if not more specialized attention, then they do in elementary.

Because of the larger amount of students in middle and high school, they can allow for specialized classes for the students with the IEPs. For example, your daughter will most likely be placed in a language arts class and math class with students who have similar IEPs. I have subbed in several VE language arts classes on the jr. high level. They are usually fairly small classes with a TA assigned to the class. I have been impressed with the way that the middle and high schools in this area handle students with disabilities.
