In what year did Atlanta, GA, implement 9-1-1 emergency calling?
At 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, 1968, the first ever 9-1-1 call was placed by Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite from Haleyville City Hall to U.S. Rep. Tom Bevill (Dem.) at the city's police station.
A week later, the 9-1-1 emergency calling system was implemented in Nome, Alaska. In 1979, Dade County, Florida, and so forth across the nation.
(It is interesting to note that there are still towns in the US that do not yet have 9-1-1 calling.)
What I haven't been able to find out is when the system was available in the Atlanta, GA, area.
Do any of you lovely people know?
If not, know where I might look or perhaps you can suggest a different category for this question?
Thank you, reader, that's an excellent resource site. I may contact the PD or the FD there if all else fails. (And no, Adam L, not by calling 911. I'm so tempted to say 'duh!' but I won't.)
1995 was the year they revamped and updated to "state of the art," meaning they finally put some funding into it out of necessity due to the horrendous crime rate there.
I lived in Atlanta (DeKalb County) for several years, including around that time, and I think we could call 911. Problem is, I can't remember for sure. We may have still had to call 0 for the operator in 1976. It's a minor detail, but I'd hate to get it wrong.
Note: 1976 and 1977 are of particular interest to me.
FYI about Metro Atlanta. I lived in the DeKalb County area but there are four counties. I think what we're seeing in the 80s and 90s are the efforts by the Metro area to incorporate all but the most rural calling regions.
The city of Atlanta is the county seat of Fulton County. (probably not pertinent to this, I know)
The Metro counties are: Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett.
Thank you, arabesque and Kabum! I'm still looking, too.
I appreciate the help, reader. As you suggested, I left a message with "ask a librarian."
arabesque: This morning I sent an email to the contact at NENA. Also, it does not surprise me that Cobb Cnty was among the last to implement 911, but did I know it? Heck no. But you found it. I'm in awe.
Kabum: Of all the news items I've read regarding this, I never saw this one. How you do what you do, I may never know.
If the NENA source doesn't provide the info I need, I may contact the office of the EMS Director by email and see what I can learn.
Here's what I have learned from asking this question:
1.) I'm not as smart as I thought I was.
2.) I have a lot to learn about internet research. You've all come up with sources that either I never found or it never even occurred to me check.
3.) And this isn't new info by any means, but I want to state how generous you three are to devote this kind of time and effort to helping me. I'm not only enormously appreciative but impressed as hell at your skills.
Let's go with what we have here. I'll post any results I get before closing the Q.
THANK YOU
Note: I am extending this to allow time for replies from my/our inquiries and I will post whatever info is received.

They all say the "Georgia Emergency Telephone Number "911" Service Act of 1977" (the last two, I think, were just proposals to amend the part about paying for the service). I'm not sure this is what you're looking for, since it was just -passed- that year, it doesn't say (unless I missed it) whether or not it was implemented then. I couldn't find anything else that looked relevant, the 1995 date was the one that kept popping up. I hope you find the answer from some reliable source, though, I'd hate for this to torment you. Good luck :)
**reader ~ Here http://www.911dispatch.com/911/history/i... it says, "1982 ~ The metro Minneapolis-St. Paul area implements an E911 system that was reportedly the first multi-county Enhanced system in the country. It served seven surrounding counties. " ♥

On the history page of the APD website the first mention of 911 is in 1995.
http://www.atlantapd.org/index.asp?nav=History
Best I could do.
Yeah, it didn't seem possible that it was established then. I can't remember when Mpls's was either, and now I'm finding less for us than I did for you! Weird. Seems like it would be a simple city stat to find. I must be doing something wrong.
Kabum will probably make fools of us both. I was sort of leaving it for her but finally I just had to give it a shot.
Oh, no, That's just the sort of thing you don't want to make a mistake on. I know that we got our initial system in the mid to late 80s but that's as close as I can come from memory. I had no joy looking it up either. I'm not paying the paper to let me get lost in their morgue either!
You could see if the Atlanta library system has a reference help desk, those people can be really helpful.
They have an ask a librarian tab. I think you need to register.
***Edit) Thank you arabesque. I told you you were better at this than I am! I'm going to leave it to the professionals now.
Dix, always nice chatting with you!

Getting closer...
"So in the 1980s, Atlanta central offices were gradually converted to handle 911 service. "
http://www.atlantatelephonehistory.info/part5.html
"The Coweta County Board of Commissioners, in 1988, put the question of having a 911 system before the voters in a referendum. The response in favor was overwhelming and work began in late 1988 to develop and implement the system. Responsibility for implementation was placed in the Emergency Management Agency. After many months of hard work, the system "went live" on May 10, 1990 with the first call being placed at 9:11 A.M. by then County Commission Chairman, Jimmy Davis. "

But Atlanta isn't in Coweta County! Bear with me... I'll be back!
ADD:
From a story dated Tuesday, 12 Aug 2008, 10:18 PM EDT:
"... Fulton County Manager Zachary Williams tried to assure residents the emergency response system works.
'Never in its 33-year history has an incident occurred like the one that happened last Saturday,' said Fulton County Manager Zachary Williams."

At first I didn't know but the story came on the news, like literally 2 seconds after I read the question. Very brave boy.

I'm not sure, but do NOT call 911 to find out.
You may want to check wikipedia.
