Should it have been 61 or 61*?

When Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record in the summer of 1961, Ford Frick (the commissioner of baseball at the time) added an asterisk (*) to his record. He did this, because he felt that Maris really did not break the record because he did it in 161 games when Ruth did it in 154 games. (In 1961, MLB had just expanded the playing season by 8 games - which gave Maris more time to break the record.)

So the question is: Was Ford Frick right in adding the asterisk or did Roger Maris deserve the record?

Just as a side note, the asterisk was removed MANY years later, but this is just an opinion question - not a factual one.

Update:

Correction: It was 162 games (not 161 as in the question.) I typed this a little too fast, sorry.

Ford Frick and his cronies were all good drinking buddies with the Babe. They did everything within their power to keep Babe on top. To a man they rooted against Roger and so did Babe's widow. To their dismay Roger broke the record so they only thing left was for them to do was to place an asterisk to try and lesson Roger's achievement.

It should never have been placed there and thank goodness it was finally removed. 154 or 162 games really didn't matter, it was still considered "a season".

In my mind Roger still holds the single season record for two reasons. One: he never told steroids or HGH and second, Yankees Stadium's old dimensions were so much greater then the ball parks of today. If Maris had played the 61 season in today's ball parks he might have hit 80 home runs.

No it wasn't right. Babe Ruth played in the time where a ground rule double was counted as a home run. You can't punish a player for how many games there are in a season. I don't think he was right at all. Part of the reason why people want the * with Barry Bonds is because they don't feel like he did it the right way. Well if it turns out that Bonds didn't know about the steroids than there should be none. But if there is enough evidence to prove he lied than the * needs to be there.

Oddly enough, I remember a movement when Ichiro Suzuki broke the hits record to put an asterisk beside his name.

They dont belong period. The game has evolved and records were made to be broken. Is everyone going to forget who babe ruth was because someone topped his best home run season???

haha this is a good question.

Roger deserved the record. Its 61. It will always be 61. The current record for MLB overall has an asterisk next to it too IMO .

Roger Maris did not hit his first home run that season until the 10th game (might acutally be a little later). So if you go from his first home run til the last game of the season it was under 154 games.

agreed with scooter and others, it's not like Maris or anyone else added the extra games just so he could break the record. The games were added by the MLB.

  • He was wrong for what he did. Maris deserved the record. Wasn't his fault MLB added a few more games in the season.

Ok im not going to comment on Maris im going to comment on Bonds.

In the prior weeks it has been discovered the actual drug found in Bonds body was NOT steriods it is based off of the same components as are in any weight gain formula that is found over the counter at any Wal-Mart Sams club or any other HEALTH foods place. The Feds are even saying it was a LEGAL drug not a illegal one.

Bonds is not on trial for Steroids he is on trial for BALCO and lieing about having any involvement with BALCO. BALCO produces many different medications including the main ingredients for Hydroxicut. They also manufacture grow hormones and steroids.

Most people honestly hate Bonds because 1 he isnt a Yankee. 2 because he openly blasted the Yankees and when he was traded from Pittsburgh LMAO he vetoed the prior trade to NY and publicly said he cant be bought.

It is not fair to be putting him in the same catagory as MAC or Raph or any of them. How would any of you like it if the cops came to your door and said you killed a 5 year old child? No proof just said you did it? Would you want to see some proof? Would you be pissed if the world called you a child killer? Of course you would so until theres proof that he did it then shut up. In America we have rights we are innocent until proven guilty

I oppose ALL uses of asterisks when it comes to record books so my answer is no.
