Your question is impossible to answer as asked, but that's not your fault. Think of Decatur, which is its own city, as a neighborhood of Atlanta, a city patched together by neighborhoods.

People wise and job wise, there are good and bad neighborhoods, and Atlanta has them both. Decatur is in the "good" category.

But, really, there's more to Decatur, too much to elaborate upon here. In a nutshell, it's undeniably cutting edge in retail, restaurant (you missed Ya-Ya's, but, Thumbs Up is back, thank the Lord!); its 19th and 20th Centuries history is moving, and there are very, very establised residential area of Decatur. Nothing snooty.

It's a better-than-average run city with a respectable and mostly effective city government, headed by a (usually) reasonable longtime mayor, a man born for the job. I particularly appreciate the police department's exemplary chief. It includes a solid lesbian community. It's a very nice city that used to be a very nice town.

I would say only move if you have a job ready, people say this is the place for rise and opportunity. But it's so different when you live here, as for the people they can be cruel at times. Even on public transportation they are so damn ignorant, so don't use that unless you really need too. As far as living wise, you can risk it living on the east side, but to be safe, I would say stay north of atlanta, to be in the better areas. Try Alpharetta, Dunwoody, Roswell, North Springs, and etc. Hope this helps, I live on the east side of atlanta, and it sucks, plus the crime is crazy.
