Can anyone explain this INSANELY odd reaction to zoloft?

So on Monday, I was prescribed Zoloft for sleep issues and minor anxiety problems, but I had very odd psychological/physical reactions to it. Physically, it made me feel like I was on some sort of speed or something, tremors throughout my body, increased heart rate, I couldn't really formulate sentences since my voice was so shaky and I was stuttering so much.

If it were just that though, I would have been able to come to class, what was really odd were the psychological effects. Oddly enough, they made my insomnia reach insane levels (I got about 12 hours of sleep those 5 days), and my anxiety reached insane levels. A slight noise would make me bolt from my chair, I was scared to leave my room, and I just felt spaced out and fuzzy. Now what was REALLY weird, was that I could remember every single dream I had in EXTREMELY vivid detail, I could even remember how I felt throughout the dream and what I was thinking. Since a lot of my dreams involved me doing certain events, It came to the point where it was VERY difficult to differentiate the dreams from reality. For a few days I even thought I was bipolar and that what happened in my dreams were what I was doing when my other personality came out. It definitely leads to some awkward social moments when you talk to someone about something you did with them when it didn't actually happen (haha).

Luckily one day after they pulled the meds I was close to being back to normal, and I expect a full recovery by tomorrow.

Update:

I was only taking 25 mg the first two days, and 50 mg the other three, so I doubt it was because I was taking too much

You experienced side-effects, including some of which are covered by the Black Box warning on the drug, like mania, quite possibly akathisia, hypersensitivity to stimuli, and loss of motor control/shakes. If you have a read of the literature that came with the medication, then you'll find pretty much everything you've said is covered by the warnings/precautions. If you go to rxlist.com, you can read it all there.

The dose that triggered it isn't really important... you just had a nasty reaction to the drug. The dreams/reality confusion is also known about & has been reported.

Medications sometimes have unusal side effects. I once was paralyzed for hours after being given the antibiotic Erythromycin. You never know how a drug will affect you until it is in your system. If your doctor is prescribing Zoloft for minor anxiety and sleep issues, you need a new doctor. The best answers for anxiety, insomnia and other mental health issues are found in only one place: The bible. I'd encourage you to check out the website below.

i looked up the side effects-

Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

My thoughts are (since i take a lot of meds including zoloft) is that you were on too high of a dose, why i think that is because i was on zoloft and i had 2 or 3 symptoms but when they lowerd it i was fine (some people have to take lower doeses. I see these really big people who are on a small amout and these small plp who are on large)

    hope i helped =]]

It sounds like you had ataxia. I am not an expert, but recently I have had a very bad reaction to another neuroleptic...mine was that my muscles froze in a bad position and I literally could not move...but the thing is, sometimes things don't work for you. But don't give up. I'm dealing with medications at this point too, with no luck so far... But do what your doctor says. It's still very much worth it to try another...I promise. It can be scary, but you can get through it.

You endured and lived through a severe reaction. Many of those drugs are not good. Try meditation to help with your Anxiety. There has got to be other ways to help , thus eliminating these drugs that just cause more drama. Many times hallucinations go with these meds and in time get worse.

Not every one reacts well to any medication. This sounds like an overdose to me.

This is a poor choice in my opinion for "minor" anxiety and sleep issues.
