Record-breaking winds in France and Spain kill 15 people. Do oil companies believe it's true?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090124/wl_afp/europe...
These record-breaking winds killed at least 15 people, left over a million without power and created havoc in the two countries. Do oil companies believe it's real, or they think it's a hoax created by "greenies"? Should we, the responsible citizens, "just mind our own business" and let things get worse?
*Thankyoumam*: If you read carefully the news you'll see that only 4 victims (children) were in the building that collapsed. The rest of the victims were scattered. And greater population is not the cause of the record-breaking speed of the winds -global warming probably is.

Yes, we can expect more freak weather worldwide.
Here in the Pac. N.W., we've gotten "500 year" floods every year now. The last record flood was measured in FEET over the previous record from the year before. It flooded areas that until now, had NEVER been considered being in a floodplain. The ever widening parameters of severe weather records, is a clear indicator of rapid climate change due to AGW. How much snow is too much? How much rain is too much? How deep can a flood really get? Heat drives the weather, increase the heat, and severe weather events increase as well.

You should not assume that extreme weather events are caused by man made global warming. This naive assumption has absolutely no proof whatsoever to back it up. The climate is in fact cooling, and history does indicate that some of the worst weather ever recording was associated with the onset of the Little Ice Age. There is more known about the surface of mars than the ocean circulation cycles of the Atlantic ocean. There is a very good reason we are all taught history, please try to keep an open mind.
"Great westerly gales conspired with the prevailing high sea levels to cause vast destruction. Powerful wind storms and surging sea floods inundated low-lying North Sea coasts, drowning hundreds of thousands of people in some of the worst weather disasters ever recorded. The floods of 1240 and 1362 saw over sixty parishes in southern Denmark's diocese of Slesvig "swallowed by the salt sea." To add to the difficulties, tidal ranges increased after 1300, reaching a peak in 1400.
The Little Ice Age had begun.

The wind was not a hoax.
What makes the wind memorable, is that this time a building collapsed and 15 people inside died. If it happened 100 years ago, nobody would have died. The article said for the first time 9 agencies responded to emergencies. What happened before they formed the 9 agencies?
Every natural event will kill more and more people, and destroy more and more property, simply because there are more people and property now.
I get so sick of this.

I work for an oil company, but I don't represent them... so my opinion is mine alone:
Sure, I believe that 15 people (give or take) died from some wind in France and Spain... but I don't believe that human action is responsible for the wind. The idea of doing something to stop global warming is no different than the ancient people who sacrificed virgins to the volcano so it wouldn't erupt.
I love efficiency - but it has to make economic sense. At this point in time, no other source of energy on earth is as economically sound as petroleum. I like solar collectors, and I'm okay with wind power, but I think wave power is better.

Why blame it on oil companies. Do you think it wasn't windy until they came along. This has been a cool year. Obviously the winds are related to global warming. That is a very baseless but typical argument used by many on the left. They blame everything bad on the bogey man big oil and capitalism.

if you have 15 dead people, it is pretty hard to dispute they are real,
my question is what is there to dispute? high winds, (you must not understand how wind is generated), are we disputing that 15 were killed, not like 14 and 1/3 since the organs of one are still on life support,
what is it that is up for question?
as for global warming, i'm am being deadly serious here, you can not support that with any data from NOAA, the russian climate measurements, or any other nation for that matter
your data is from one source, the UN
if you would be really concerned about the environment, you would actually look at other sources to confirm or dismiss lies
in my opinion, you may get the world you think you want, but trust me, it is not what you want, and it is certianly not what i or the people who have taken the time to research this want
i like having lights in my house, i like having warm water for taking a bath....i like modern living
i hope you will like your cold home,
edit: sofa king, you are so uninformed, sacrificing virgins to the volcano did work, i saw it on TV and we KNOW everything on TV must be true, check all the fictional movies out there, you can see for yourself,
we must trust TV EVERYTHING IS TRUE! ha ha ha

This is weather. We had record breaking colds here. I am not going to say that is proof it does not exist.
Where is Dana saying someone is confusing weather with climate?

If it makes you feel better, paint yourself red, get a placard and stand in front of the corporate office of Exxon. I really don't see how that would prevent natural disasters as they are in their nature unpreventable.
What we need is better building codes.

As many alarmists on this board have said, you are confusing weather with climate.
