Reusable nappy advice?

I'm currently 25 weeks into my pregnancy and keen to use reusable nappies, in particular the Bumgenius "all in one" nappy.

As this is my first child I don't know if/what else I need to use in conjunction with the all in one nappy (flushable liners etc).

Can anyone please advise. Plus does anyone here use Bumgenius? Would you recommend them?

Thanks! :D

I use those and love them.

I find you have to change them more often, but everytime i put a disposable on my baby she gets nappy rash so clearly the bumgenius are much better for her.

You will need to get flushable liners, but wont need them till baby is on solid food.

Also i brought the washable baby wipes which are good to save using disposable baby wipes.

    This is what i use:

-16 nappies (wash them every other day)

-nappy bin with mesh wash bag inside and one bag spare for when one is in the wash

-wet bag for when we are out.

    i DEFINATLY RECCOMEND THEM,

I don't have Bumgenius ones, but I use Cotton Bottoms. You will likely need disposable liners, but I use fleece liners for my 3 month old - I have yet to experience the poos when she's on solids! Apparantly, you can keep using the fleece ones, but they will need to be rinsed of the mess before washing - I will likely just get the disposable liners then. The fleece ones are great for nappy rash as they draw all the moisture away from the skin and into the nappy.

You'll need a nappy bucket and some sort of detergent - I recommend napisan. I also recommend getting a couple of mesh bags (you can get them on ebay) that you can put in the bucket, meaning when you lift the nappies out to wash, you lift the whole lot in one go.

I also recommend reusable wipes - it's actually easier using these in conjunction with the nappies as you don't really have anywhere to put the disposables as you're changing baby! You could put them with the liners, but baby wipes are not supposed to be flushed as most waterworks systems can't deal with them. All you need is some fleece material cut into squares, or some terry towel wipes.

    Good luck!

bumGenius are fantastic nappies, and really popular. Both the one-sise pockets and the AIO's. The AIO have the benefit of being sized so can provide a better fit, but the one-size have the benefit of growing with your baby so you only ever need buy one-size.

You can use flushable liners, but they are not a necessity and arent great with newborn poo's as it tend to just slide off them and out of the nappy! lol

It may be worth trying a couple of diferent brands of nappy as they all fit different babies differently, but overall the bumGenius is definately a highly rated and recommended reusable nappy.

  • I don't use bumgenius but I do use cloth (bambino mio)

Can highly recommend cloth, have saved a fortune, its not hard, they don't stink, you don't have to wash them at 90 degrees - just dispelling some myths!

Flushable liners are great, maybe not so good to use liners with a newborn as the poo can leak right out of the nappy when its very runny, but great when they are on solids, just pick it up and straight in the toilet and nappy to soak in the bucket - easy peasy!

    Good luck!

I have a 3 month old and have used Bumgenius AIO since she was born. I have also used the flushable liners since she was born, my hubby really likes the liners b/c then he doesn't have to "deal" with the poop! I love the Bumgenius and would totally recommend them. I bought a lot of different brands of cloth diapers when I was pregnant and Bumgenius is one of the best. Good luck with cloth diapering; I love it!

    Reusables are really easy!

I've never used Bumgenious, but I use bambino mio & cotton bottoms.

All you will need is: a bucket (with a lid), 2 mesh sacks (to the nappies in in the bucket) and a bag to store nappies in when you're out and about.

I don't soak my nappies, just stick them in the bucket. I have a bucket for poo and a bucket for wee. You don't need to separate them, I just like to! Also, you don't need to wash them at a high temperature. I wash all my nappies at 0 degrees. Sometimes I wash them at 40 degrees if they are a bit stained, but it's not often!

You can use flushable liners if you like. I probably wouldn't recommend these until baby is on solids. I use fleece liners for my little one.

Reuseable nappies are really easy. People will tell you it's hard and it smells, but it's not true. And you'll save a fortune!!

i used cloth diapers with a velcro outer shell, the cloth was the liner, if you want to deal with all that mess and smell, i only tried it on my first, (i have 3 almost grown sons) i would work a second job in order to pay for disposable diapers, their great, i only used the others in emergencies, after that.
