You CAN get dental work done while pregnant. Actually it's very important to keep up with your dental hygiene while pregnant because for some reason you are more prone to get cavities etc. I would just make sure that they are aware that you are pregnant. I know they won't do x-rays if you are pregnant, and probably nothing that would involve sedation, but they will definately do a normal cleaning.

It depends on the dental work and where you are at in your pregnancy. You should see the dentist when you're pregnant as they say neglected oral health actually raises your risk for premature babies (your body is focused on the mouth infections and not the baby). You of course can't get x-rays. There is a lot of controversy over the mercury in silver fillings, pregnant or not. And you have to be cautious about the anesthesia and pain killers, especially in the first trimester.

I had a cleaning done yesterday. It all depends on what kind of dental work you need done. Make sure you inform your dentist of your pregnancy.

Just so you know, my dentist told me pregnant women should brush 3-4 times a day and floss once daily. I didn't know that until yesterday. I guess pregnant women are more prone to tooth decay and gum gengavitis.

It depends on what kind of work, etc.

It is actually recommended to get regular cleanings because there is a link between dental health and baby's health.

However, if you are talking about cavities, root canals, etc, I think it's more a matter of you would have to get the work done WITHOUT anesthesia, and who wants to do that?

    I could be wrong though.

I believe after the first trimester it is safe to have some dental work done, like teeth cleaned. I know that with my first pregnancy I had to have a crown done but that was in the 2nd or 3rd trimester.

I'm in my 2nd trimester and I just went in for a cleaning. My hygienist, who was also preggers, had to get an okay from the dentist. They said they usually don't do anything in the 1st or 3rd trimesters. When I went in I said "no" to the x-rays and just got a simple cleaning.

I dont' know what kind of work you need, so if I were you I would check with my OBGYN if it's more than a cleaning. Goodluck!

No you need regular dental visits while your pregnant. Your teeth can suffer a lot during pregnancy. JUst tell your dentist your pregnant.

    Not true.

Depending on the urgency of the situation, the dentist might advise waiting, or will do what's necessary. Obviously having decayed teeth/chronic pain during pregnancy is NOT good for the baby.

And of course you can, and should have regular check-ups. (They won't do x-rays unless clearly needed, and then your belly will be shielded with the lead apron.)

  • it depends on what you are having done. I am having my teeth cleaned, so i know you can have that done.

I had fillings and an x-ray done before I found out I was pregnant so I'm a little worried about that.

you CAN get dental work done.. however let the dentist know that you are pregnant. There may be some procedures that cant be done, or they may have to be done differently.
