What's so great about Montauk, NY? /Vacation spots?
I know of at least two songs names after this place. What's so awesome about it?
also, is it a good vacation spot? I live in the farthest northwestern corner of Massachusetts, and my 2 year anniversary is coming up soon (in May). I'd like to go somewhere on a mini vacation, romantic, but not TOO far away. Any suggestions?

Montauk is lovely - so is Sag Harbor. That whole area of the Island is beautiful. But crowded in the Summertime.
I also recommend Shelter Island!

Another suggestion is Martha's Vineyard. It's close but because it's an island, you really feel like you "get away". If you go in May, you'll get better prices, but it'll be a bit cool.
There are many fabulous B & B's as well as luxurious resorts that cater to romantic vacations. Edgartown or Menemsha would be good choices for towns in which to choose lodging.
The ferry boat ride over, the beautiful scenery, the great food and fresh air all make the Vineyard a good choice for a nearby romantic getaway.
I have a website/blog about Martha's Vineyard and romantic ideas (listed in the source)

Montauk is my my favorite place of all time. Every summer my family goes out and stays there. I love the atmosphere. Its a beautiful place with lots to do. There are many resturants and beaches. It is a romantic spot for couples (also happens to be the place i got my first kiss many years ago). Some areas can get pricey though.

Montauk is mostly a fishing community, very much like Gloucester, Mass, and a summer resort. It's a nice place for a week vacation. Excellent restaurants, excellent beaches, and excellent hiking trails. Also you could visit the village of East Hampton, about 15 minutes from Montauk, and sightsee the playground of the rich and famous in East Hampton. I knew someone who was walking along the beach in East Hampton when she saw a snorkeler step out of the ocean. When the snorkerel removed his mask, it was the Beatles' Paul McCarthy.

Yes, Montauk and the whole end of Long Island is beautiful, especially off season when it's not crammed with people. It has a wild, windswept feel, with endless potato fields butting up against wide open ocean beaches.
Montauk is famous for its lighthouse: http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&client=...
I think Montauk would be a great place to go for a short vacation. I wouldn't make it too late in May, tho. Too crowded.
You can either go into the various town centers where there's chic shopping and restaurants, or avoid them and stay off the beaten track.
