What do you think of Lovelocks recent comments?
In a recent interview with New Scientist (24 Jan, 2009, No2692) James Lovelock (originator of the Gaia theory) said that:
"Most of the "green" stuff is verging on a gigantic scam. Carbon trading, with its huge government subsidies, is just what finance and industry wanted. It's not going to do a damn thing about climate change"
James Lovelock is one of the founding fathers of global warming alarmism and is still a strong believer and promotor that man is causing disastor, if he claims carbon trading etc... is just a big money making scam that will do nothing to stop global warming, maybe the alarmists that support such schemes should sit up and listen?
What do you think of his comment about carbon trading etc...is a scam? I am interested especially to hear what alarmists think of this.
He at least cant be accused of being a "denier", devout christian or a right wing conservative funded by Exxon!
Just as a comic aside, he is going into space later this year, I wander how much co2 a rocket produces taking off?
I know he is an ardent supporter of AGW, and he proposes drastic action. I am not taking him out of context, he said carbon trading etc... is a scam, I just want your thoughts on that because its whats being pushed as the solution.
LOX and Kerosene in the most common rocket fuel for civilian orbital launchers according to Wikipedia, I believe Kerosene is a hydrocarbon. But there are other fuels used aswell.

James Lovelock may be a scientist, but his system of beliefs are not science.
He has always maintained that the Earth is dying because of human activity, he just periodically changes his mind about which activity and how.
Why would he have an issue with CO2? its plant food. According to him plants are good - destroying plants is bad. I think he just has a problem with the capitalist system. It's a pity people like that don't just move to China.
(edit) What's this hydrogen powered rocket nonsence? Hydrogen is not a realistic rocket fuel for heavy lifting. You can't liquify it at room temperature and it needs to be stored in a cryogenic tank, applications are limited to the final weight critical stages. Kerosene, or solid burners is the fuel of choice for getting into low orbit.

The rocket uses hydrogen and oxygen to propel it and its exhaust is water vapor. Now there is no problem there if the electricity used to produce the fuel from water came from a hydro or nuclear plant, but if it came from a green coal plant lots of pollution. He is just mad because Gores scheme is making money and his is not and because he got cut out of the big profits the oil boys are raking in he is blowing the whistle. Whistle blowers are always part of the con game at the start, but if they get cut out of the profits from it then they start screaming. This is why it is smart to keep all of your conspirators well paid like Gore, Obama and Arnold are.

You have misunderstood and misrepresented his comments. Is that deliberate? He absolutely believes humans are the cause of our current environmental problems. He also understands what most people don't - we are in well over our heads and all the current schemes combined will still be well short of what is needed to fix the problem. Only a shift of the most profound and fundamental nature in our way of living is going to save us. Anything else is window dressing. Offsets in particular are a boondoggle just as he says. 1) Capitalists love them because the schemes and the money bag are endless. 2) They won't work because only absolute reductions in CO2 will work.

Lovelocks believes that natural forcings are dominant, and nature can adjust itself.

Well now you have over 650 scientist at the Poland global warming conference that are saying we are not the cause of global warming.

It's either this or taxation, unless you want to see some sort of totalitarian solution; what we can be sure of is that the problem will not just go away by itself.
Assuming the rocket is fuelled by hydrogen, it will produce no CO2, only water.
