What is different when loading a horse in a slant-load trailer vs. a straight-load?

I have only ever loaded a horse into a straight-load. But are there any differences when loading a horse/horses into a slant-load?

All human conveniences aside, the horse can balance himself more easily during the ride in a slant load than a straight load trailer.

Horse's have their preferences just like people. I know my friend's horse like straight load because he is blind in one eye. My horses don't care. The only thing I can say is to make shore that you ALWAYS have it set up so the horse can't get out the people door. There was a slant load that a girl had at a show and nothing to block the horse from the people door. To keep it simple, she was badly hurt and trampled when the horse was spooked.

horses seem to like slant load trailers better, they are more open when they get in and they feel more comfortable. plus it is much easier for them to balance in a slant load because if you it the brakes hard they are not being flung forward. horses actually prefer to ride backwards. i have had both and have never had a horse balk at the slant load. but size has a lot to do with it also, not very many horses will load in a two horse without any problems.. but if you are buying a trailer, i would go with a slant.

Its a bit different for the horse, backing out. The advantage to slant is you can haul more horses in a shorter length trailer. They say horses like it better. The one thing I always worry about in a slant is if i get t-boned by another vehicle on the head sie of the trailer. :-(

I prefer slant loads, easier to load multiple horses and the horses balance better. My horse was loaded in a straight, two horse one time, and when the person (not me) went to unload him he forgot to untie the lead rope first and when my horse stepped out he slipped from still being tied still and scraped his back legs pretty bad.

I think they also get better air circulation in a slant load.

Slant slant slant! & Goosenecks pull better & safer than bumper hitches. #1. - when you are only pulling 1 horse you can put them in the 1st/front stall, putting the weight toward the front which helps the pull of the trailer be more smooth & is safer/you have more control when pulling if it's windy. #2. Slant are better for your horse. -1. In a straight: Their legs & bodies aren't "jarred" if/when you have to make a quick stop. -2. In a slant: It's easier for them to balance. -3. If you take a friend's horse... most horses are more willing to haul in a slant than a straight load. (My current horses are use to our slant & are great travelers & jump right in a slant.... they will go in but are much more hesitant into a straight.)

not really. Easier for you to get out when loading multiple horses. Uh, normally they cant travel with food in front of them to keep them occupied. It is easier to turn around in there if your horse wont back out.

not really, except that some horses who are used to one kind will have a hard time with the other.
