Is this a good idea for Preschool THEME?
Get to Know You
Or please someone give me a better topic and IDEAS for activities. I'm having my new class ever next week and I still don't have anything planned. My room is still being set up and I'm stressing out. This is going to be the first class of preschool for the children and myself.
The children are only 2 1/2 yr. olds. Is getting to know you topic vague, boring, inappropriate, etc??
HELP please!!
thank you.
Thank you all, however most of the answers are Activities, not themes. I'm looking for a weekly TOPIC for the first week of preschool class.
Thanks again.

for toddlers the simpler the theme the better
Getting to know you is OK - name, family, favorit toy, pet etc
Later something as simple as Winter, Mirrors, Music, Bubbles, Balls, Stuffed toys may be ok themes for toddlers
There are web sites of preschool themes
www.preschoolwhiz.com,
www.preschoolexpress.com/
Google it

*shakes head no*
i may be 18 but i do know that this wouldn't be......how should I explain....
Getting to know you? Why would a 2 1/2 year old want to know the student next to him/her?
They want their candy
their toys
their mommies and daddies
center your themes around books
they have books published by Scholastic i think
that go in age order
I read to my lil bro for years, their system works
and I work in a preschool now with 3/4 year olds
since this is your first week
There's some books in Level 1 like
I dont know I just gave a book back
it was called
Good Bad Cat
basically the cat misbehaves and gets called BAD all the time
till in the end the cat chases a mouse and is called GOOD
so for that week...your theme is.........behavior
2 1/2 year olds know a bit about causing trouble maybe?
If not....they do know about pets/animals....get an animal book
there's your theme
you have to get them interested from the get-go
make them go home happy asking their mommies and daddies if they could stay
Good luck.

Pre-School - what a fun age. Depending on how long they will be with you, you need to plan a variety of activities. Little ones have very short attention spans. Songs that everyone knows are good - like 'Happy Birthday', which is also good for learning names. Teach them to sing (and act out) 'Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes." Nutrition is an excellent theme to use with little ones. You can make applesauce with them and tell the stories of Johnny Appleseed or the star in the middle of the apple. You can also make butter from heavy cream by shaking it in a baby jar. Use 2-3 jars and have the children take turns shaking it to solidify the cream into butter. Serve on SALTED crackers, as most store-bought butter has salt already added. You can also make peanut butter with them. Just remember to have FUN. That makes for the best learning experiences. Good luck!
Source(s): I love kids. Also completed a BOCES program for day care workers when I was in high school. We learned all kinds of activities, like those described above, and I kept my notebook. I've used lots of the activities in many environments with all kinds of kids. - Anonymous5 years ago
Can't think of a book off the top of my head. Sad since there are so many. But I do have a few random art projects. You can do half sheets of white paper and let the kids cut strips of black. let them clue the black strips onto the white and you have an abstract zebra. You can do the same for tigers, or even do giraffe spots. You could also create multiple giraffe necks and label them each with a number 1-5 or however high you want to count. Then have the students put the correct amount of dots per neck.

Sit the children in a circle and play the Name Game. Have them clap and say the following: (they'll pick up the rhythm)
Sitting in a circle
Playing a game
When I point to you
Please tell me your name.
The child tells their name and everyone says Hello Timmy.
Then you go around the circle until everyone has their turn. Be sure to inclulde yourself so that they will be able to practice saying your name as well.
After a few times, you can let the children do the pointing. See if they remember who didn't get a turn.

That theme is just fine...or you could do All About Me.
2.5 year olds are still self centered and you will find all sorts of activity ideas for All About Me/Me, Myself, and I on the internet if you search because we almost always use this theme at the beginning of the year.
If you decide to go with this theme you can email me for ideas if you have specific areas you need ideas for. It's a large theme...but you'll want to have your lesson planning to go along with your class routine...so story time and activity, small group-literacy, numeracy, etc... center time? Large group? Outdoors? Etc.

A more popular theme at that age is "All About Me". You can take pictures of them and put them up. You can talk about their favorite colors and favorite foods. You can teach them their body parts and songs about colors, foods, body, friends. When I taught preschool we always started the year off with the theme "All About Me." You can look on the internet and type in that theme and you will get tons of ideas. Type in "All About Me theme for toddlers".
Good luck. Oh, you could also have them bring in pictures of their family for "homework".

I think that is a little to old for preschoolers, maybe you do like "hands on paint" and you could have like a bunch of activities with paint, I don't know what you wanna do but that was my best idea

that is a good theme to do as long as you have the activities to back it up. you can have them get to know their fellow classmates and you get to know them. i did this theme at a center with a class of 18 month to 24 month old children in the middle of the year. it was a good refresher for them. good luck with that.

the best topic in the world is animals, kids that age love animals. You can have them say the pets they have, learn about the animals, say what animal they would want to be. My daughters pre-school did this and it was a huge hit.
