Do female ghost shrimp need a male to have babies?
I have one ghost shrimp in my 3 gallon tank. I was doing a water change in the tank and once I added new water in and the water swirled around I noticed it let loose some milky little balls. Am I right by thinking these might be eggs? It looks like its swimmerets a little more expanded than normal so I'm not sure if "it" still might have more.
Is it possible for a female to have babies without having a male present at all?
I had a couple other shrimp in with it a little less than a month ago, but they died. So I'm not sure again on how long it takes for the mating and egg bearing and such.

Yes they do need males to have baby's. if she was pregnant she would have eggs on her legs. They would look like round little peach colored balls. She may have been in contact with males in the tank she came from originally. Here's a link of what the eggs look like.

Nope, female ghosties need males to fertilizes their eggs. I've had my ghostie girls have babies in my tank (loads of little shrimp in there right now lol) but I've never been able to keep track of them enough to know the gestation period of the eggs. I don't separate them from the tank.
If your females are carrying eggs, she will hold them in her swimmerettes everywhere she goes. They are little greyish green blobs. If they are free-floating in the tank, and not on the mother...they're probably not fertile or valid eggs. Normal eggs stay attached to the mother until the hatch, then the babies hitch a ride on her swimmerettes for a while.
