Why does refrigerating your batteries increase their life but taking a laptop in the cold kills the battery?

It's said that if you want to prolong the shelf life of a battery you should put it in the fridge. That makes sens to me because it's slowing down the internal reactions of the battery.

However, whenever I walk to class with my laptop in the winter or have my camera in my pocket in the winter it significantly decreases the charge on the battery. Why this contradiction?

It actually doesn't help at all and does damage to the batteries...

Batteries are powered by chemical reactions. Chemical reactions happen slower at lower temperatures. Any battery will be weaker when it is cold, so laptops, cars, even flashlights have minimum operating temperatures.

Batteries that are not in use have small leakage currents, which is why they gradually run down over time. Cooling the battery will slow this process down, though for modern batteries it probably does not make much difference.

Depending on the type of battery, actual freezing of the electrolyte in the battery can create ice crystals or cause ice expansion that can physically damage the battery and ruin in. I would not advise sticking any battery in a deep freeze and every battery needs to be warmed up to reach full power.

When my Sony Vaio has a DVD in the optical drive, it spins around from time to time and eats up the battery more but if there isn't a CD or DVD in there it doesn't seem to make a difference

The cold doesn't really do anything to the batteries nor does it kill the batteries.
