Why is Matthew referenced as "Levi" in Mark and Luke?

Question for Christians:

Does anyone know why Matthew is referenced as "Levi" in Mark 2:14 and Luke 5:29. I'm merely curious since I know he is reference as "Matthew" in Mark 3:18 but not 2:14.

    Nobody knows for sure, but Bible scholars think it's different names for the same guy.

    Levi = Hebrew

    Matthew = Greek

    Same with Saul/Paul

    Saul = Hebrew

    Paul = Greek

    No doubt to fulfill some future prophesy claiming that he invented denim and that its popularity is a sign of the "End Times" ......just like every other event that occurs signals the return of the Christ.

    Matthew was Matthew, Levi was Biff, Jesus' childhood friend. =0)

    Source(s): "Lamb", by Christopher Moore
