Pelvic exam question?

During the pelvic exam he asks have I noticed more discharge than usual. I said of course I've had more since becoming pregnant, nothing significant. He didn't swab anything, I have no symtoms at all and he prescribed Flagyl. How can the GYN tell if you have an infection without examining anything under the microscope? I know I will probably get some, he's the Dr. trust him answers....but it I'm honestly wondering about this. I don't want to take an antibiotic that could potentially cause a yeast infection for no reason.

Update:

All he told me when I questioned it, was that the immune system is supressed making it easier to get infections. About the symptoms he said, not all infections have symtoms?!

I wouldnt take any medication for an infection without being tested because no matter how good a doctor is he can't know what you have unless he tests for it, he can be pretty sure as he is educated in medicine and the body, But not without tests. Go to another doctor that will actually test you. Im pregnant and i have a lot more discharge then before i was, and my doctor has never said anything to me about this. In fact pregnancy books say its quite normal.

It could be that he noticed a particular color or odor to your discharge that clued him into an infection. Probably just should have asked him when he was writing the prescription out. If you really have questions, I'd give the office a call and see what they can tell you. As to the person above me, antibiotics do most certainly cause yeast infections. They kill off the good bacteria in the vagina that restrict the growth of the yeast and give the yeast free reign. A lot of women and children get really bad yeast infections from antibiotics. My baby girl got a terrible yeast infection diaper rash from amoxicillian.

he might have seen that the discharge is a different color and he doesn't have to look in a microscope. If you do go on an antibiotic you can eat yogurt so you do not get the yeast infection.

I had a ton of discharge with both of my pregnancies..no one ever swabed anything and both of my ob/gyns said that it was perfectly normal, I was never prescribed anything, nor did I ever get any yeast infections while pregnant, although i know they are common.

Drs will only prescibe approved antibiotics during pregnancy. antibiotics dont cause yeast infections the cure them. and you dont want to have a yeast infectino while pregant. Drs can tell by looking at the texture of your discharge as well as the color of your vaginal wall if you have an infection. you may not even no it. if you dont trust your dr. get a second opinion from another one. Also he could have swabbed and you didnt feel it. he could have swabbed but not your cervix and you not felt it since it was a cotton swab
