check engine light on a 2001 Prelude/ emisions codes O2 sensors...?
I have a 01 'Lude with some emissions problems. I want to know how to clear the code safely and without the use of computer software. I know what's going on, and I can't afford a new catalytic converter and new O2 sensors, and my state inspection is expired. It's not like I don't make enough to fix it, I don't want to. It runs better and gets better fuel mileage. It's not like I'm some kid who has some riced up Honda, but I do have a modified car, so the right parts are hard to find and are pricey. I have a Peterbilt currently eating car repair money. A good set of consistent answers would appreciated. Thanks.
I forgot to mention.... The catalytic converter is cooked. It went bad and is now completely hollow. I'd rather not replace it, I just want to get it to go off long enough to get the OBD II inspection done. That's the only thing that's holding me back. Safety inspection is in the bag.

If the car is running to rich it will eventually eat up the converter and clog it up. If there is a way to clear the codes with out the use of computer i would like to know myself. Disconectting the battery is a short temporary fix on the codes.Fixing the problem is the only way to clear the codes.

Disconnect the battery for five minutes. This will clear the code. How every the code will come back up when the engine at proper temp after five minute. If you only have a O2 sensor code. You may not need a catalytic converter. Before you take the test. Run it hard at freeway speed. This will help blow it out for the test. And you have a better change of passing the test.

You fell into the same trap many people do. An O2 sensor fault code does not always mean replace it. It usually tells you that there is a problem with the fuel/air mixture and/or overall fuel management. The cause could be plugs, wires, fuel injectors, fuel pressure to name a few items. In other words, you have a new sensor, but may still have unburned fuel being exhausted. Did you clear all codes to start fresh?
