Old dogs want to be alone when they die?
My 13 year old Chesapeake hasn't been feeling well for about a week. He never wants to go outside at night and last night he kept barking and whining to go out. He hasn't come back and I think he went off somewhere alone to die. My son said this was normal behavior for dogs. That they leave their pack "family" to die. Is this true? We were thinking about taking him to the vet today to have him put down, I am just upset because he is gone.
Beau was a duck hunting dog and loved to do it. Even in his last years my husband would take him down to the lake and he would retrieve like he was a puppy. He was a very smart dog and I will miss him more than I thought. We did find him laying under the duck boat ( it is on a trailer) We took him in and had him put to sleep yesterday. Thank you for all the answers.

Well first let me say I am sorry about your dog, and second, I would like to say I am sorry you got so many bad answers. Yes, dogs do in fact go off to die. Anyone raised on a farm knows that. Your son is right, when they sense it is time to go, dogs do go off to die in peace. I hope you get your dog back, but it is likely that he knew it was time to go. I am so sorry about your dog.

Contrary to what everyone is saying while this is a sign your dog is very ill, it is NOT a sign that she is nessary dying (unless you do nothing). Been there done that and the dog besides was so far into circulatory collapse, the vet couldn't get a blood sample (he didn't bleed) - that was seven years ago, the dog is on the sofa chewing a bone...

Yes Old dogs do sometimes go off somewhere to die by theirselfs could be a defense against what they feel as weakness but i would rather like to think its to save the family from watching him die. Im sorry about your friend.

I have also heard of many types of animals doing this. I personally am not sure why they do it but I think is is truly normal behavior.
I would like to say that I'm sorry for your loss. I had to put down one of my dogs back in the summer after spending 18 wonderful years with him and it is still devastating to me. They become so entwined in our lives and they leave a really big hole when they are gone.

Hi yes this is very sad because I have known a few old dogs they do this they take themselves away sometimes even breaking out of their gardens to go away to die.I can't explain it but it is a natural behaviour.we found one old dog once on a playing field laid in the pouring rain of course we interfered and as it couldn't walk carried it off to a nearby garage and contacted the owners as luckily it was tagged.they came then it was so pleased it managed to stand they said it kept getting out as it was trying to find a lonely place to die.so sad I do hope you find your dog as it'd be nicer if you could put it down then you could stay with it till the end.look in quiet places passages ditches woodland nearby.I do hope you find him

this is sad and not very true. my mutt is 15 and he is always wanting attention and he loves being around us so your dog running off is kind of odd but i could be true i don't know much about that breed of dog but when my pure breed German Shepard got sick with cancer she was always wanting attention and wanting to be with the family. so i think it's odd when dogs run away to die. i'm sorry to hear that your beloved dog has run away to die alone i hope he doesn't die i hope he comes home soon. please keep us updated.

I would hope that you are doing everything possible to find your dog and get him to the vet, even if only to have him put down humanely.

Definitely not.
Blunt Object hit the nail of the head. A canine would not leave the relative safety of the pack if it was in a weakened condition through old age or illness.
If you find your dog, I would advise taking him to the vet for his health to be assessed.
