Handgun purchase- what should I get next?
I live in NJ where getting a handgun is a major undertaking. I applied and recieved 2 permits recently.
The first gun I got was the Bersa .380
I am thinking revolver for the second gun, probably chambered in .357 I don't want to spend $1000 either.
the local shop has lots of Taurus and S&W, but I haven't looked close.
Anybody have something else they like or recommend?
I like the compact and small frame guns - hence the .380.
I have a friend offering me his gp100- what should i pay for it?

The .357 Magnum is probably the best all-around handgun ever invented.
The .357 is a great choice because it can also fire .38 Special ammo. The .38 ammo comes in a wide variety of loadings and is available almost anywhere. It is probably the cheapest center-firee ammo available.
I like Smith & Wesson K (medium) frames, the models 19, 13, 66, and 65 but only the older ones without that stupid key lock. You can get a good used one for $350-$450. Rugers are good also and they are cheaper than the S&Ws.
Check GunBroker.com and AuctionArms.com.

GP's in 4 inch should bring $400 to $500 retail.... around here used GPs bring $375 or so (revolvers are hard to move with the semi-auto craze).
I like SW... I really like K frames with 3 inch bbls.
I have owned a few SW 10. 13. 15 66 67 etc over the years... I really like the stainless 65(.357) with a 3 inch heavy bbl and fixed sights....

I have the Taurus .357 SS with the 7 shot cylinder. I love it. There is nothing POS about it. I only paid $500 for it nib. S/W makes a great revolver also. What do you plan on using it for? Hunting-.357 or larger. Home defense- .38 and up. Plinking-anything you want and are able so shoot all day.

With the price of ammunition steadily increasing a 9mm would be my choice maybe a CZ 75 B, Browning Hi Powered, Glock 17 or Glock 15.

Taurus is far from a POS I have actually owned them
But a Ruger is a stronger built gun, but it is also a stronger built gun than a Smith
GP 100 are going for between $350 and $400 around here

$350 is a good price for a decent used GP100, maybe $400 if it's got the 6" barrel.

S&W and Glock are both well made and have very good price points that are well under $1000.

you can do a lot better than a taurus pos and still be under 1000, look at ruger sp101 or gp100. best 357 you vcan get in my opinion ois the gp100
