What was the most influential anime series of the past twelve years?

It doesn't seem that anything has yet topped a certain mecha series from 1995, but what's come the closest?

Update:

Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon predate Evangelion. Again, this is about IMPACT ON THE MEDIUM, not popularity. How exactly was, say, Ghost in the Shell influential? (No C/Ping from ANN!) The best I've heard is Pokemon, and that was still largely an extension of elements from Shin Megami Tensei.

In the United States the Dragon Ball series started a lot of it, but Pokemon blew them out of the water, and continues it's franchise to this day. Though recently it's been Naruto, and Death Note.

In Japan at the moment The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumia is the most popular and has one of the largest fan basses.

I would have to say Pokemon (followed closely by Yugi-Oh and Digimon) because not only did they have multiple series of the show, but they released 5+ movies, book series, as well as a card game and many other items/shows pertaining to the series. This anime took the U.S. by storm and influenced many children (and continues to do so)! <3
