Aikido a good choice?
I'm looking to pick up a self-defense martial art. There's been kids at school pushing me around and I'm tired of it. I can't just avoid them, because they cover my various routes between classes. I don't want to get in trouble hurting them, so I liked the relatively non-violent aspect of Aikido. Any objections/detailed suggestions?
(Yes, I realize this is a more long term art.)

If you throw somebody you will hurt them badly. Most people are not trained in falling and they will probably put an arm out and break it, or crack their head on the pavement. Don't do it unless they're threatening you very much. The best self defense plan is to kick a knee, shin, or groin and run away. Hopefully you'll have hobbled them enough to keep them from following.
As for routes of travel. Get a friend. Keep them with you at all times. Form your own posse. Even one friend will help.
Ask for a teacher to observe the behavior. Teachers hang out in hallways (or they did in my high school) between classes. Tell them where to look for trouble and they'll look. Nothing like the cold stare of a teacher to chill the ardor of a bully.
If you give in and fight them, you'll just be proving that you're part of their fighting mentality and become part of their pecking order. What's the value of that? It just means more fights to get higher on the rungs of the pecking order.
Learn self-defense for your own confidence, but don't plan on using it. Learn whatever you like, Aikido, Judo, TKD, the various forms of Karate or Kung Fu. But don't go around impressing people with it. You'll just become the bully instead of the bullied.
If you like Star Trek references, then it's about as smart as Ferengi wanting to become the exploiters themselves instead of stopping the exploitation of workers.

Aikdo, is good for exercise and eventually for protecting yourself in a combative situation after years of practice of course. I recommend you cross train with as many arts as possible until you find the right one for you as most schools offer free lessons. You will know when this happens. You won't even have to ask.

NO NO NO!!!!!!
This art takes about 5 years just to be okay. You must learn in my opinion a better art like Krav Maga.
Ju Jitsu or if you want a gentle sport but totally awesome for defense then Judo. Please do not take up Aikido if you want to me able to defend yourself quickly. It takes years!!!!!

Yes, this sounds like a good choice. If not, I would reccomend Okinawan karate.
