IS Metallica the Worst band ever, or what?

Seriously.... all you hear is how bad they suck, how they sold out after the Black Album (some would say after And Justice For All).

They aren't like the rest of the Big 4, who have stayed AWESOME all this time right?

I mean MEGADETH never slowed down, cuz Cryptic Writings, Risk, teh World Needs a Hero and the System has Failed were all amazing cutting edge masterpieces.... right?

Oh...they weren't? Risk was actually one of the worst Metal Albums of the 90s? Huh.

Well, surely ANTHRAX? You mean they haven't done squat worthwhile since Persistence of Time?

SLAYER will save ....oh... wait..they haven't turned out a truly noteworthy album since Seasons in the Abyss.. and Tom sounds like crap these days.

And wait... how about Non Thrash Bands?

Yep..Iron Maiden released No Prayer for the Dying, Virtual XI, and the X Factor, which all sucked... and Fear of the Dark, which besides it title track was average.

Or Nine Inch Nails which has done nothing since the Fragile.

So... I guess my question is... why Does MEtallica get singled out for such a special brand of hate?

Is it because they were SO good that people cannot handle the fall? Is it jsut the "Cool" thing for idiot kids who really got know clue what they are talking about to do now, or is there some other reason?

What do YOU think?

Update:

***The Hand that Feeds... yes they put out 4 albums and their net worth is still NOTHING. Would you comprehend the point better if I stated that NIN has released 4 of the crappiest albums of the last 25 years since the Fragile? Yo Comprendo?

Update 2:

***INsanity..hate to break it to you, but it was NEVER called Metal up your ***. They originally WANTED to call it that, but it never even remotely came close to being released as such. So please stop trying to sound cool. Thanks.

I would expect no band which has been around as long as those bands would put out masterpiece after masterpiece....its pretty much impossible

with that being said, Metallica gets the most attention for their drop becaues they were at the highest. none of the other big 4 came close to selling the same amount as Metallica (Megadeth being the closest and they are miles behind in record sales).

So, with Metallica at the top, peopl want them to keep putting out the top notch albums and when they don't, more people see that as a failure. When Megadeth put out Risk (which was a terrible album)...it wasn't so much a big deal since they were pretty far out of the spotlight. Metallica has never really faded out of the public eye.

Its like anything...people want the top dog to fail. and when they do "fail", people take pleasure in it. On the other side, since they are so popular, they sometimes get praise when they shouldn't either IMO

so, whether its fair or not, thats what they get for being the arguable the biggest metal band ever

***edit: I will take this moment as a Megadeth fanboy to say I think that The System has failed is actually a pretty good CD. Blackmail the UNiverse, kick the chair, Back in the Day are all really good songs (of course there is some filler too)

I am one of those ones that says after Justice I do believe. I hate the Black Album with a passion that burns, but see with Me it's just personal preference, they went from making Music that thrilled Me to making Music that bored Me. But I'll not say that they sold out. They evolved, which to My mind is a pretty necessary process for a long-running successful Band.

Honestly Peach Man, as a Metalhead I hate to say anything negative about My own kind, but if the shoe fits...It's like this, I think elitism is pretty common amongst a lot of Metalheads, sadly. That is where the "Metallica sold out" comes from. Too much narrowmindedness.

And frankly too while We are at it. I have yet to see a Band stay "fresh" longer than 10 to 12 years, ever. Some Bands may have 40 year careers but they say pretty much everything meaningful they need to say in the first 10 years generally.

  • I really think part of it following the crowd. Another thing is they are gods of thrash and held to a higher standard too.

    *****

I have never been a fan but I have to give them credit where due. these guys put in the sweat equity and deserve a hell of a lot more respect than they are getting.

    ******

To The Hand That Feeds, Reznor has done nothing , NOTHING worth buying since The Fragile. And YES, I am a die hard NIN fan. ( I just am honest too )

i knew you'd have a good point. you don't really seem the type to single out a band and bash them.

you have very valid points, although i'd like to argue a few details like how Virtual XI and X Factor were underrated b/c nobody seems to like blaze bayley

anyway, I guess Metallica gets singled out b/c out of all the bands listed, they were the leader of the Big Four of Thrash until Black Album and after Black Album, they were pretty much the biggest metal bands in terms of fan support (poser support) and money (posers buy a lot plus there's a lot of them)

I my opinion, Metallica doesn't suck is just that their Death Magnetic Album was their main downfall but you have to admit that almost every band has a downfall at some point in their career, you know, every band wants to reinvent or explore new things but sometimes it isn't a good thing for them. You're right Killer Peaches, people just can't handle the fall and bash them down ....waaaaaayy down for it I guess they were expecting much from them and were very disappointed in the end, but oh well we still have the rest of their good stuff and the hope for a comeback...which better be fast,

Metallica is probably one of the more popular metal bands. So they have more Lovers, as well as Haters.

But I have to agree with you, the points that show Metallica's flaws very well apply to other bands as well, for example:

Some, like me, say that all their songs sound almost the same. But that also goes for some of my favorite bands, like Iron Maiden and the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

You make a very good point.

Metallica are still one of the biggest bands in the world, even after nearly 30 years, so they must be doing something right. I think Death Magnetic is Metallica getting back to their best.

Because they're the most visual. The most widely known. Metallica has damn near become a household name. So they get the attention that comes along with it, the good *and* the bad.

I know I'm guilty, if you want to call it that, of bashing post-Justice Metallica. They simply don't do anything for me anymore. I tried, too. When the Metallica album came out, I listened to that thing non-stop for a long time, trying to *force* myself to like it. Just couldn't do it.

I hope you're able to separate the validity of opinions. I know that bashing Metallica has become the thing to do, but that doesn't mean everyone who shares that opinion is guilty of jumping on the bandwagon.

Wow I couldn't agree more.... people and users who can't shut their traps about Metallica selling out. I've said it one too many times but I'll say it again.

There is a certain user in particular who needs a good smack as he never ceases to stop bashing Tool or Metallica.

A band can't grow if it doesn't change. Yeah, Metallica has gotten 'soft' but bands change as people change. You can't be stuck singing and playing the same sh*t for 30 years. I'm a huuuuge fan of Metallica's early stuff, but I wasn't disappointed with Death Magnetic.

    Hey Bro!

Peaches I know how you feel about Metallica. You actually feel very strongly about them more so than anyone I have seen in a very long time.

Many guys I know that have been fans for YEARS like since the 80s are just bitter about the whole Napster thing. Lars' Greed. They feel that Metallica left them in the Dust and sold out with the Black album.

They think that Black and post-Black is weak.

If you like them still and if you are happy with Death Magnet. If you still feel strongly about them.

Then continue to do so and Fu** everyone else. I know you get defensive when people bad mouth Metallica or even at the least say the are Overrated. I know it bites a little on your low tolerance as a huge fan. So just ignore it and love what you love who gives a Fu** what they think.

With the way people are today WHO THE FU** KNOWS why they hate them or think they are Overrated.

I will no longer post my original music on here. I am not saying its the best but from you and other contacts I know its GOOD and I think I am good but when I post something there are always the 6 or 7 Jealous Idiots and FU** WADS that have to say

"ITS REPETITIVE" - "YOU SUCK" - YOUR LAME - YOUR AN @SS"

Or god only knows WHO that may even very well be my own contacts and peers giving them all TUs

FU** UM!!! I am happy with my music and from now on I will send my contacts that care private emails of the links to my sh** but otherwise FU** UM I don't give a FU** what they think
