I... don't think you wanna be one but if you insist...
Watch Lucky Star. Konata will teach you the ways of an otaku. Other helpful anime are Genshiken (1 & 2) as well as Welcome to the NHK. A word of advice - be more like Konata from LS, less like Saito from NHK.
But that's not all! Collect anime figures, buy DVDs, attend anime cons and most important of all, the king of anime cons, Comiket. Don't forget Akihabara!
Wait, there's more! To become a fully fledged otaku, you need to... I'll stop here because I ran out of ideas on what to say. May Haruhi be with you on your path to enlightenment.

Well, you can always find time to watch anime and read manga. I always do the hard work first. When I get enough of free time, I do what I like to do best: read manga and watch anime.
I enjoy a lot of Shounen manga than shoujo manga.
I read a lot now.
I collect Japanese music related to anime.
I have some anime posters in my room.
I have some anime merchandise.

Watch anime that aren't usually released on adult swim.
Like having known anime like Princess Mononoke/Plastic Little/Tenchi Muyo and etc to up to date anime like ToraDora!/School Rumble/Gunslinger Girls etc.
Just watching widespread known anime like Naruto and Bleach or Sailormoon wouldn't be considered a otaku.
IMO you would be just a super fan (lol) of that anime.
Also collecting several stuff like model kits, figures, or etc of stuff.
Watch Konata in Lucky Star to see a true otaku.
lol hope this helps

your whole life has to revolve around anime
yea theirs many people who still have a normal life and are still otaku`s.Being a otaku doesnt mean you cant breath without a manga book in your hand,it`s just a obsession and all you have to do is collect anime *otaku* stuff little by little. What many people do is that the will walk around in their cosplay ;p

Just watch a lot more shows, buy some shirts, go to websites, and keep track of releases, then you are an otaku, my friend.
