Why/how does root beer hold its fizz for so long?

I know this sounds like silly question, but I really am being serious.

I like Diet Pepsi, Sprite, and I love a good root beer (Dad's, Barq's, or the best, IBC!). I love to open a pop and sit and watch a movie or some television and sip it over an hour or two.

I have noticed that diet sodas loose their "fizz" (CO2) the fastest. So maybe their is something to do with the sugars or corn syrups present in non-diet sodas?

That being said, Root Beer is by far the KING of holding fizz. I have literally seen cans of Root Beer open at room temperature for 12 hours or more and the things still fizz like crazy when I dump them down the drain. (A sin I know, it's my kids that leave them open and undrank!)

Anyway, what is it about root beer that gives it that ability? Anyone out there in the "soda pop" industry or know someone who is that knows the deal here? I'll tell you what, if you could figure a way to get that into diet sodas, you'd be on to something!

I don't know whether it's type of root beer you're buying, but many root beers can be made in the same way as actual beer, making CO2 from the fermentation of sugar through yeast. Thus the fizz is actually organic. (err... not organic, but from an organism.) I don't if this is still true with most store-bought root beers, but I think some of it is.

(I think Barq's and IBC do it that way. They both taste more like actual root beer than the kind that comes out of fountains, like "Mug".

I ve always wanted to know this to. I ve also noticed that Beer seems to keep its fizz as well, I ve put one in the fridge for the fun of it, and still had full fizz the next day (no cap on in the fridge). As far as the old root beer style, I was thinking maybe. However, we have some hot dog stands that make the best root beer by far, they taste better than anything I ve tried commercially, but this root beer will lose most of its fizz in under 2 hours and almost all of it within 6-8 hours even capped.
